Propagandistic? Us? Heavens, no!

I've often enjoyed the 3rd article in this Watchtower series on propaganda. It's so amazing that the Watchtower could print it, warning about avoiding being the victim of propaganda. All of their descriptions of it fit the meetings, mags, assemblies to the proverbial "T". I'm stunned every time I read it.

But today I read the 4th article, "Is the Work of Jehovah's Witnesses Propagandistic?" Firstly, is that a word? I dunno. Anyway, reading the title, what would you think they are going to address? They'll go over their own mind-control techniques and carefully explain why they are not propaganda, right? HA!

No, they establish this strawman in the first paragraph that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the question. They beat the hell out of him for a few paragraphs, then they conclude by saying, "So you see, we aren't propagandistic at all." Amazing, astounding, ass-slapping. Enjoy.

Many journalists, judges, and others have commented on the positive contributions that Jehovah's Witnesses have made to the communities in which they live. Consider some examples. After attending a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses, a reporter from southern Europe commented: "These are people with strong family ties, they are taught to love and to live by their conscience so as not to harm others."

Another journalist, formerly negative about the Witnesses, stated: "They live an exemplary life. They do not violate the standards of what is moral and right." A political scientist similarly remarked about the Witnesses: "They behave toward other people with profound kindness, love and gentleness."

This is one of my biggest peeves about the WTS. Why don't they quote their sources first and last names. That way, they can get some leverage with whom they're quoting. My guess is there is someone somewhere in the writing department making this crap up. I honestly cannot think of one person that really has ANYTHING good to say about JWs. If they don't hate them, they find them a nuisance for sure.

    Some opponents

    Note: not "Some critics"

So two words into the article and they're already employing one of their favorite trigger words that rank-and-file JW's automatically associate with Apostates™ and other such vile scum that eat from the table of demons. And it only gets stupider from there.

Everything about JWism and the WTS is so stupid that I can barely even stand talking about it any more.

Wow, this thread went nowhere. I'm surprised.

The author of this article covers several side topics, and does not address the question raised in the subtitle, "Is the Work of Jehovah's Witnesses Propagandistic?"

The answer to that question is a resounding "YES IT IS!"

Quite a brilliant piece of, well, propaganda. After establishing that they're not Zionists, Communists, American Imperialists, or anarchists (who ever thought they were?) they follow with several paragraphs of self-aggrandisement finishing with the quite audacious sentence:

As The World Book Encyclopedia says, in a climate where ideas circulate freely, "propaganda differs from education."

As if there were anything more antithetical to the Watchtower cult than "a climate where ideas circulate freely"!

That's why I loved this article so much. It almost feels like somebody on the inside that doesn't buy it anymore, just writing edgy crap to see if they can get away with it. (I don't believe that, but it has that smell to it)

Well, they honestly state all the things they aren't, but when it comes to stating what they are you can't find a single positive defining statement in the whole article. You leave the article with a lot of what they do, i.e. how they behave, and what they teach. Whether something is teaching or propaganda is determined by the methods used. Here is a chunk of the World Book Encyclopedia article in context:

Propaganda is one-sided communication designed to influence people's thinking and actions. A television commercial or a poster urging people to vote for a political candidate might be propaganda, depending on its method of persuasion.
Propaganda differs from education in democratic societies. But education in a dictatorship can involve teaching children and youth by techniques that could be classified as propaganda. Educators in democratic societies teach people how to think, but propagandists tell them what to think. Most educators are willing to change their opinions on the basis of new evidence, but propagandists ignore evidence that contradicts them. Educators present all sides of an issue and encourage debate. Propagandists build the strongest possible case for their views and discourage discussion.

Yes, that article on the Web site was a picture perfect example of...propaganda. The World Book piece went on to say:

How propaganda worksPropaganda appeals to its audience in three ways. (1) It calls for an action or opinion that it makes seem wise and reasonable. (2) It suggests that the action or opinion is moral and right. (3) It provides a pleasant feeling, such as a sense of importance or of belonging.

Let's see...yep, every single meeting, including the meetings for field service, are chock full of propaganda. Does the Watchtower really propagandize?

    w01 8/1 p. 14 Make Your Advancement Manifest
8 First, since “oneness” is to be observed, a mature Christian must be in unity and full harmony with fellow believers as far as faith and knowledge are concerned. He does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to Bible understanding.

Well, which Jehovah's Witness wouldn't want to be considered a mature Christian? (1) A call for action that seems wise and reasonable, (2) with a strong suggestion that the action is moral and right (and beneficial), and (3) provides a sense of both importance ("mature") and belonging ("unity...and full harmony with fellow believers"). Why, according to the World Book Encyclopedia they quoted from their "teachings" are actually propaganda!

But, the quote seemed to indicate that the World Book Encyclopedia agreed with them. Didn't it? That is called "deceit." "Deceit" is an intentional attempt to mislead someone to an incorrect conclusion through either omitting needed deatils or including sophistic support. God hates it.

Job 13:5-13 — If only YOU would absolutely keep silent, That it might prove to be wisdom on YOUR part! Hear, please, my counterarguments, And to the pleadings of my lips pay attention. Will YOU men speak unrighteousness for God himself, And for him will YOU speak deceit? Will YOU be treating him with partiality, Or for the [true] God will YOU contend at law? Would it be good that he sound YOU out? Or as one trifles with mortal man will YOU trifle with him? He will positively reprove YOU If in secrecy YOU try to show partiality; Will not his very dignity make YOU start up with fright, And the very dread of him fall upon YOU? YOUR memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes; YOUR shield bosses are as shield bosses of clay. KEEP silent before me, that I myself may speak. Then let come upon me whatever it may be!

I don't believe there is a JW alive that can read that article and then read what the World Book Encyclopedia says and come away believing that this was not an intentional contextual misuse of the quote.

Schizm, Scholar, defd, Shadow, a friend in need, and anyone else who is an active JW: Can you explain how this article is NOT blatant and outright manipulative deceit?

Would we expect that from an organization lifted up above the mountains?

    From the imbedded article:
At the same time, the work of the Witnesses is educational. Using the Bible as a basis, they teach people worldwide to reason on Bible principles and thereby develop right standards of conduct and moral integrity. They promote values that improve family life and help young people cope with their peculiar challenges. They also help people to find the strength to overcome bad habits and to develop the ability to get along with others. Such a work would hardly be termed "propaganda." As The World Book Encyclopedia says, in a climate where ideas circulate freely, "propaganda differs from education."

They "they teach people worldwide to reason." This point equates to Point #1 of how propaganda works: "(1) It calls for an action or opinion that it makes seem wise and reasonable."

They "teach" people to develop "right standards of conduct and moral integrity." This equates to Point #2 of how propaganda works: "(2) It suggests that the action or opinion is moral and right."

They "help people to ... (fill in the blank)." This equates to Point #3: "(3) It provides a pleasant feeling, such as a sense of importance or of belonging."

Point for point, the very paragraph they quoted the World Book Encyclopedia in demonstrates clear propaganda technique. But, JWs won't know. Most who listen to them won't go check the Encyclopedia to see whether it was used out of context. The World Book Encyclopedia all but screamed that Jehovah's Witnesses are propagandizers. But the out of context quote seems to support the vile practices of Jehovah's Witnesses.

It's a shame that no current JW was willing to pick up this challenge from AuldSoul:

Schizm, Scholar, defd, Shadow, a friend in need, and anyone else who is an active JW: Can you explain how this article is NOT blatant and outright manipulative deceit?

It would have been interesting to read their defense. Ah well...
