Dundee, Scotland Saturday 14 June 2008

    Everyone welcome!

Babylon3:45pm Guided Tour of the Old Steeple (£2.50 per person; about an hour; refreshments at church after; see linked webpage for more information)

I thought a foray into a property belonging to Babylon the Great would fit quite nicely.

I have spoken to a guide and have around 12 places reserved, 2 of which are taken. If you can commit, post so as these places will be assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Note that this tour is not recommended for anyone who is not of a reasonable level of fitness or who has a heart condition due to the stairs.

    5pm'ish A few drinks in a pub

We can decide which pub nearer the time.

    7pm'ish A meal at a restaurant

Any recommendations? I'm not familiar with the restaurants in the area, so am open to suggestions.

So far, it's me and an ex-JW friend. So post if you're interested, and let me know if you are definitely coming for the tour so that I can put your name/username down for the place.

    Hope to see you there.

Will there be a bell ringing ceremony?

Ninja - would be good to see you again mate. Will you mention it to your brother-in-law? Maybe my friend and I, and whoever else fancied it, could visit a pub after the meal too where I could buy you some whiskies in return. (I can't have too many before the meal as I'll need to hold a knife and fork.) Say if you want me to reserve tour tickets.

R.Crusoe - no bell-ringing demonstrations on the Saturday as far as I know, but I found this from Dundee Parish Church (St. Mary's):

    Bell-Ringers' Room (Second Floor)

This room is used regularly by the Town bellringers. The bell ropes allow the bells to be rung full-circle, and the set of eight ropes near the door can be used to chime the bells. The bells are rung twice on Sundays for Church Services and also rung regularly for weddings and special occasions.

    Also:

St. Mary's Tower is thus closely woven into the history of Dundee and has also national importance as a splendid example of the late 15th century Gothic style in Scotland. It is also the oldest surviving building in Dundee, being a belfry, a clock tower from the 16th century, and has been used as a watch-tower and prison.

No other interested parties from Scotland? Anyone from anywhere else fancy visiting this glorious country for a long weekend and meeting up? :)

I'll probably ring the guide to confirm the numbers of tickets required in the next week or two, so if anyone wants one post here.

Or if you just fancy coming for the drink/meal afterwards that's fine too. :)

    Everyone welcome.
