Where's the payoff?

Excuse me if I'm being cynical, but I've had my own experiences with [B]organized religion, though it was non-JW. The group I was affiliated with demanded that full fledged members tithe (10% off the top of your income; pre-taxes), and a donation basket was also circulated at nearly every gathering in addition to tithing. Even kids were encouraged to participate; they would give them little envelopes to put loose change into and put in the basket. In fact, the group my parents dragged me to for years demanded not just one tithe, but three. Its been years, but I think the break down went: 1st tithe-directly to the headquarters, 2nd tithe stayed local and went to pay for the ministers, deacons, and elders salaries plus the rental of the building used for meetings, and 3rd tithe was to be kept aside in your bank account and used for gas, lodging, etc when you went to annual conventions and such.

I joined this site because my wife has gotten involved with JWs, and I'm not happy about it. The more I read here, the less happy I am. So far I haven't really made a stand or confronted her about it, except to say that I'd be damned unhappy if she started tithing to them. Her response was a blank look. Apparently she never even heard of tithing, either the JWs don't do that, or they haven't gotten around to mentioning it to her. (At this point in time, not an issue since she is not employed, I just wanted to get it clear from the outset. And they CERTAINLY won't get anything from me.)

So I'm wondering, what's the payoff for the WTS/JW organization? I'm far too cynical to believe nothing at all. And I've seen some vague references around the site here to 'publishers' being exploited to spread brochures, etc, and saying that the society uses them...but I really don't see the economic tie-in. I've also seen posts that say the WTS is actually a book company, not truly a religion...so, are they legally a non-profit, or what? The pamphlets, magazines, etc, can't be doing anything for them, as there are no ads in them.

Every religion I have any experience with has some method(s) of 'fleecing the flock' I just don't see what this one's is. Somebody fill me in, please?

They dont ask for any percentage of your income, nor do they pass around collection plates. But they have contribution boxes at the back of the hall, and they remind the members often, what their financial status is, and how their contributions can help.

The wtbts is in a constant "we are in need of more money" pleading to the flock.

Don't fool your self by thinking the magazines etc. do not end up as revenue for the wbts.

At this point they are heavily involved in properties and the cash flow is slower than they want.

Dennis the menace is a jw supporter so he is openly going to give you a different message.

Probably because he does not know that much about his own religion.

There will be others here with more documentable information about this issue.

I look at it this way. If the jw members only end up in some way to deliver one dollar a month to the wbts headquaters "and it is my experience that it is more than a dollar" they recieve at least 6 million dollars a month from their 6 million active "as they boastingly report" members.

Stick around this should get interesting.

    Welcome to this site! *hugs*

From a layman's point of view (not a JW, married an unbaptized publisher), they don't pass around a basket or anything. You sound like a very logical person, and your question is valid. The "hook" as you would think of it is the fact that they get free labor. They have very cheap labor at the publishing HQ since they don't earn a salary there, but are provided with food and shelter. (as far as I understand it, someone correct me if I'm wrong please). The labor of going door to door is free labor since you're not paid for basically advertising this organization.

Don't freak out yet bro. I studied with JW's for a while before I decided that I had learned enough about the beliefs to realize I could never become a full member and expect to be baptized. Take this time to love your wife and give her extra loving attention. Tell her she's beautiful and you're crazy about her.

However note that the WTS is still a cult and can seriously harm its members in emotional rather than financial ways. It's best to steer clear of any cultish environment.

This is a business. This businesss' purpose is to expand the business. A successful business can be reduced to one thing . . . assets. The Watch Tower Corporation is in three businesses, one is literature production and distribution, the second is event sponsoring, and the third is real estate development and speculation. The real estate's not an end, it's a means.

This business is one of the most comical entities in the world to watch. They claim their published work is the direct communication from God to all the people of the world but if they see someone reproducing some of their literature, they send in their lawyers to put a stop to it by invoking copyright laws. By their actions, they invalidate their own core teaching.

The Watch Tower Corporation is just a greedy, manipulative secular business out to exploit it's followers and accumulate all the wealth and power they can.
