JWs... That's not "MEAT JUICE" that you're eating !

A while ago I had a discussion with a JW who swung the conversation around to "the blood issue"...

I asked him that as he "abstained from blood", does he therefore only eat "kosher meat".

His response was "What's does Kosher mean" !

I explained, and he then told me that all meat nowadays was "kosher", and that the red juice that runs from a steak is infact "Meat Juice" and not blood, so it was okay to eat.

    Hmmmmmn...

Anyway, here are the results of my "kitchen science".

I obtained some urinalysis sticks that detect the presence of blood in a solution.

I cut up some steak and added it to a glass of tap-water. I did the same with chicken. After about 10 mins I dipped the test sticks in the liquid.

    Guess what ????

The stick in the middle is a control stick.

The arrows indicate which "pad" tests for blood.

    Yellow

    = No blood

    Green

    = Blood

The darker the green, the more blood is present.

The stick in the middle is a "control stick"

Sad and geeky to go to these extremes (but that's me) I know, but I thought that a visual test was much easier to show than making a JW trawl through anatomy and butchery books

Ahhhh yes the old 'meat juice' excuse.

Leolaia had a good post that got into this in detail, I'm sure she can get us a link to that post.

    Phew... a response

I was wondering if I had "outed myself" as an geeky obsessive weirdo.

    I am, but it's a secret. Sssh

    Questions From Readers?

When meat is cut in the course of preparation for cooking, or when it is sliced after it has been cooked, a reddish fluid may run out of it. Is such meat suitable for eating by a Christian?—U.S.A.

A Christian may eat meat only from animals that were drained of their blood at the time they were slaughtered. The Bible commands: "Keep abstaining . . . from blood and from things strangled."—Acts 15:29.

Of course, even the meat from properly bled animals may appear to be very red or may have red fluid on the surface. This is because bleeding does not remove every trace of blood from the animal. But God’s law does not require that every single drop of blood be removed. It simply states that the animal should be bled.

Then, too, there is extravascular fluid in the meat. This fluid may mix with traces of blood and take on a red color. The extravascular fluid filling the spaces between the cells is known as interstitial fluid and resembles blood plasma. But it is notblood and therefore does not come under the prohibition respecting blood. Hence the presence of a reddish fluid does not in itself make meat unsuitable for food. As long as an animal has been properly bled, its meat may Scripturally be used for food.

There may be times, however, when a Christian has reason to believe that an animal may not have been bled properly. If there is no way for him to get the facts, he may choose not to eat the meat and thus avoid disturbing his conscience. This is in harmony with the principle stated at Romans 14:23: "If he has doubts, he is already condemned if he eats."

They obviously take things further that the original Old Testament rules (going beyond scripture), but surely ABSTAIN is ABSTAIN.

ABSTAIN doesn't mean "ONLY A LITTLE"

I dunno, they may have gotten this one right in that the Bible does give directions on how to obstain from blood, i.e. "eat only meat that has been bled." But that does not apply to human meat, as I have never bled any woman I have.......

You need to do the same experiment with kosher meat and chicken. If the results are different, then you've got a nice little piece of scientific "proof"..

They may well have got it right... That's what sparked my little bit of kitchen science...

But with their relaxing their rules on what blood components are permitted, it has to make you wonder whether the whole thing (whole blood) will become a conscience matter in the future.

I knew that meat in it, but I thought that if I could show that this particular JW had been lied to and that it wasn't simply "meat juice", I may get through.

BUT then I discovered the article above that permits eating "a little bit of blood" in meat.

So I doubt that I can make use of it.

Excellent idea... even if the results are "not as green", it would show that it is possible for them to "further abstain". I'll post the results when I get some Kosher Meat... probably next week. AO
