Picuture it: 125th St and Morningside Ave, NYC, 10:30 AM EST

It's a bit cold and rainy but it's business as usual for the locals

    What's missing from this picture?

How is it that just a mere 5-10 years ago the place used to be SWARMING with witnesses? Rain or shine, hot or cold they were there!

Now I couldn't find one no matter how hard I looked, not even at the Dunkin Donuts! It didn't even dawn on me until I saw that a church across the way was holding a street flea market. Then I looked at my watch and thought "Hey!! Wait a minute!! Where are the witnesses??"

Isn't that bizarre?? And it's been ages since I've seen any in my area too!

What the heck is going on?!

Perhaps they have become fair weather christians?

    Or maybe an assembly day?

I would like to think it is from lack of enthusiasm for the though.

It is difficult to offer salvation to other people when your mystical Faithful Discreet Slave continually tells you that your own salvation is not a sure reality.

Now that I find shocking, Dunkin' Donuts is usually crawling with JWs on a rainy week-end! lol

Funny you should mention this. I've noticed the same thing in my area.

I live in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx. They are out here but not like they were back when I was in. I don't see then in the streets as much as I used to. And they don't come knocking in my building anywhere near as much.

Makes me wonder what's going on...

When they spiritualized the word "genea" (generation) in their interpretation of "This generation will be no means pass away until all these things take place" they yanked the rug right out from under their entire chronological system.

There is no longer any reason to believe Christ came invisibly in 1914

There is no longer any reason to believe their is any significance to 1918

There is no longer any reason to believe these are the last of the 'last days' or 'the time of the end'

There is no longer any reason to believe this is the Harvest Time

There is no longer any reason for the sheep to let themselves be beaten into a frenzy anymore.

Now, it's just a matter of time before the Brooklyn Oracles go the way of the dinosaurs, and the JayDubs become a mainstream church, just as the Mormons did. It's inevitable because prophecy has a funny way of never coming true.

In the intense lead-up to 1975, we were covering the local city territory once every two to three weeks and rural areas every 2 months. It got to the stage where householders told us to go as soon as they answered the door and would say things like, "Weren't you here just a couple of weeks ago. I said then that I wasn't interested and nothing's changed." Okay, not every householder said it so explicitly, but we were never suprised when they did say something like that because, boy, we were certainly frequently and intensely covering and re-covering the territory. And there used to be swarms of us out there spreading the "urgent" message.

Now, you just don't see them around. And, if you do seem them, it is no where near as frequent and the groups consist mainly of older JWs.

The time of the end is near...not so much for the world but for the preaching work. The signs are everywhere. The religion will still lumber along, of course, as the remaining ones huddle ever closer...

    Hi Steve2

I was involved in Watchtower Madness during that time period too. I hope you're correct about the WTBTS being on it's last legs. Wouldn't it be grand if the JW's became like the Bible Students, and the WTBTS returned to simply printing useful materials for them, not being their harsh and relentless taskmasters? It will probably take another two or three generations for the full metamorphosis, but it will happen. The JW's are a very recent phenomenon after all.

    Nate
