WT lawyers

Please help me understand something about WTS lawyers.

Are they hired by the WTS, or are the lawyers expected to volunteer? This question was not answered to my satisfaction on an earlier thread, because I know that most dubs weren't going to college for the longest time, and then how many of them would go on to law school? How many of these would be crackerjack lawyers? How many of these could afford to live in slavery after such an expensive education--at least the school loans would need to be paid off. And how many of these would still be gullible enough to swallow the offal about the FD&S?

I believe that every lawyer is hired. I believe that some of the lawyers, because of the nature of people (cognitive dissonance) might convert to justify to themselves the dumb things they are required to do. I would think that these lawyers are paid handsomely, or are given perks that more than make up for a salary.

Or, the lawyers work a deal with the WTS, perhaps regarding referrals from them. But this doesn't seem like a strong enough incentive, either.

The reason I think this way is because of the way things are in medicine. Doctors are not free, and neither are their educations. Many doctors will donate their time and talents for free for worthy causes, but few would volunteer for a cause that doesn't stand under scrutiny. There might be very few, if any, JW doctors, and I can't imagine that they are the best in their field and completely free to volunteer full-time forever at the WTS.

There are good lawyers, but this profession brings out the greed in people. I think the lawyers are happy to work at the WTS, because it is a real cash cow! I believe that they must be getting paid a LOT, because usually it takes a lot of recompense to quell that cognitive dissonance (that comes from doing something you don't feel right about).

Any more ideas/thoughts? Any concrete information (this is preferred!) ? I hope I'm making sense.

    Thanks in advance,

Some time ago I posted a link to a University where the WT was offering jobs to new Law graduates; I could not find that post. But I know that they resort to lawyers that are not necesarily JWs.

One example (the WT is listed as a costumer):

The WTS uses lawyers from various sources:

They call in JWs who are lawyers to serve at Bethel.

They use JWs who are lawyers to handle individual local cases for congregations, circuits, and individuals.

They offer to send screened Bethelites to law school.

They hire non-JW lawyers to assist JW lawyers who do not have a license in a particular state

Yes, but isn't bebu's question about how these lawyers are compensated?

Hard to believe that there are many JW lawyers, even given the fact that they had a infamous lawyer at their helm (Rutherford).

Guess that goes to show that being a lawyer doesn't mean that you are necessarily wise.

But yes, I'd still like to know how they are paying their lawyers. I believe that if they are not JWs, then they are probably getting recompensed very well--especially if they are top level lawyers, as the rumor goes.

Hayden Covington also was a WT lawyer and a JW

As far as I know the main compensation they get if they are an active JW is they get rewarded with prime assignments at district conventions -- speaking and being able to fly off somewhere to give a talk -- they do not get paid "the going rate"

    Here is a clue.

So today, the Judge ruled under a Ontario Courts of Justice Act regulation that even though Vicki won her judgement, it was below the total legal costs of the Watchtower and costs of the offer, and thus, Vicki has to pay 142,000 dollars to the Watchtower legal costs ......... http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/59515/891850/post.ashx#891850

The Watch Tower Publishing Corporation apparently was able to demonstrate to the Canadian judge some proof of their expenses. Their cost seems rather steep for motels and meals by a $100 a month volunteer lawyer. It would be interesting to see the itemized cost list for this bill.

I know that there is a JW doctor here, and many of the local Witnesses go to him. I believe he is from somewhere in the Caribbean, originally. In any case, he would have had to pass Canadian exams to practise here, so he must be qualified.

    Gary -

IMHO - the $142k is probably all on paper. Do you know if they had to provide paycheck stubs, etc. as proof?

How do you think the non-JW lawyers are compensated? How many lawyers would want to work pro bono on their stuff?

Do you know if James McCabe is a JW or just regular Joe Citizen who happens to work WT cases?
