Are You A "Dictionary Atheist"?

There is more to .. atheism than simple denial of one claim; it's actually based on a scientific attitude that values evidence and reason, that rejects claims resting solely on authority, and that encourages deeper exploration of the world. Atheism is not solely a negative claim about gods, but is based on a whole set of positive values ... That denial of god thing? It's a consequence, not a cause. – PZ Myers

If you have ever used the following arguments in a debate with a believer or engaged in hair-splitting arguments about the frontier between atheism and agnosticism you may be a dictionary atheist, or as Myers puts it, a “dumbass”.

“Atheism means you lack a belief in gods. Nothing more “

    “Babies are all atheists”

“Science flies you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings”

“I just believe in one less god than you do”

Myers had some uncompromising words for this sort of simplistic thinking in his speech to the Atheist Alliance International 2010 Convention in Montreal. Following some harsh criticism for his remarks he decided to up the ante in his blog Pharyngula in which he went as far as to describe atheism as a “movement”, and even an “organisation” with positive goals and values.

Even if you disagree with his opinions - the idea of an organisation made me cringe - you will be challenged to think about your views by his article and by the more than 500 comments that follow.

Here is the original speech that started the furore but for a fuller explanation of his point have a read at the blog entry.

Not to detract from your post but I thought this was going to be about people who don't believe in using dictionaries.

I think the big chipmunk speak a lot of truth. atheism is to me basically a "there is not sufficient evidence" kind of claim. as such it entail a standard of evaluating evidence and knowledge of said evidence, and somehow dealing with the horrible methaphysical consequences of being able to do what one like and which is right. (the horror!)

nothing benefit from being reduced to slogans.. certainly not being an atheist.

All the gods man has created are just guesses as to how and why we are here. An atheist is someone who doesn't sign up for any those guess belief systems.

Unshakled I think Myers' point is that this really doesn't say anything. It's a natural defence when believers repeat the old canard about atheism being "just another religion" or "I don't have enough faith to be an atheist" etc but it is an empty statement.

He is challenging atheists to think about the positive things they stand for; a way of thinking that leads to non-blief in invisible deities but is bigger than that one negative statement. As a generalisation ahtiests value ways of discovering truths that believers don't. We refuse to shackle our minds with religious group-think and see it as a virtue to believe the impossible - add your own experience.

DOnt you love when someone tells what you are when they dont know you... How freaking hard is it for people to understand that some of us just dont have a God to worship? There is no movement, no organization no affiliation.

I do not belong to any group who identifies itself as "Non-believers-of-the-grinch" or any other such a group because such groups do not exist.

Did you read Myers' article? I am not arguing for these points I am quoting Myers who refers to these arguments as the sort of lame response that drives him nuts in atheist v theist debates.
