As A JW Were You Generally Feeling Guilty Over One Thing Or Another?
by minimus ini believe the witnesses keep people in the cult by means of using guilt as a tool.
it seems people who leave the religion tend to stop using meds and anti-depressants.
exjws seem more content and less filled with worry and guilt.. what do you think?.

I think if JW's were more mainstream the phrase wouldn't be "Catholic guilt", it would be "JW guilt". 13 years out, I don't belive a single thing the JW religion has to offer, but I can still feel guilty about everything.

How many of us check the obits for JW relatives' names?
by Scully ini have jw relatives who are getting on in years.
the relationship is very strained - very little communication, and frankly i'm getting exasperated being the only one making any effort to maintain it.. several years ago, when a non-jw relative passed away, it took several days before the custodian of the information (a jw) decided to send me an email to inform me - you read that correctly - i was informed, not over the phone, but via email.
a couple of years go by, and in the meantime, a jw sibling has a baby, and again i learn that i was left uninformed about the pregnancy and the birth until well after the fact.

I often wonder about my sister, because she had 2 major bouts of cancer within a less than 2 year time period, but she got married and moved somewhere out of state, so I don't know where she lives or what her last name is, so it wouldn't really work for me.

"Stuff I really liked while growing up in Evangelical Christian culture."
by leavingwt inthis youtube user is no longer a believer, but recalls some fond memories from his former culture.
he relates how these good memories can make the de-conversion process very difficult.

No. Our congregation almost never did anything at all. And when they did do something, it was massive amounts of lame. Even to a nerdy, not exposed to anything 8 year old JW girl.

I never know to be jealous of someone getting out of Portland before me, or sorry for them that they are leaving. Wish you the best on your new start.

Short memorials, boring weddings, no birthdays, etc...just because it places too much emphasis on a person?
by Chemical Emotions indoes that seem fair?
did it ever make you feel kind of...ashamed to be a human?.

I was able to swallow most of the crap without questioning, but even when I was a fairlyish small child, I always resented the fact that it never got to be about the person, even after they had died. I (stupidly) tried to verbalize that somewhere around 9/10 years old to my mother, and learned never to do that again.

A Sincere Questions for Current/Former WTBTS Elders/Pioneers...
by AGuest inmay you all have peace!.
i would like to know something, if you will indulge me, please - thank you!
to what extent did you, as a jw... read/know the contents of the bible?
-

I got away with as little Bible reading as possible as a pioneer. I was (and still am) a voracious reader, but I can't ever say I really read anything when I was in. I would just kind of look at it, and my eyes would glaze over, and nothing really ever penetrated.

Since You've Left The Organization Have You Turned Into A "Bad" Boy or Girl?
by minimus inthe witnesses say that if you leave the religion you will become a very vile person.
you will probably get vd.
you will get into drugs and booze, your life will go to hell.. personally, i've been pretty much the same guy although i would now be viewed as a "fornicator".

No, I was much more badly behaved when a Witness. There were a large group of us that frequented gay clubs, got drunk, and various other things. Right now I'm a soccer mom. It doesn't get much more boring than me.

What Actually Made You Leave The Organization?
by minimus inmany of us needed time to get away from this religion.
i took the course of fading and it's worked pretty well for me.
after i saw sooooo many silly rules being enforced, i needed to get out!.

I was so depressed, I just wanted to die. At that point, I can't say that I was disagreeing with much in the religion, I just knew if I didn't get out, eventually I would stop thinking about taking the entire bottle of pills I had hidden in a pair of my boots, and actually take them all at once.

I love potato chips.
My brain grows back every day, because my kids are both zombies and the race to eat it every morning.
