Was C.T. Russell all that bad?
by Sad emo indisclaimer: this is a question purely about russell's bible teaching, not about his personal life, whether he was a freemason or whatever else.. ok, russell set himself up as a bible teacher, a lot of his theology was borrowed from groups such as the adventists and certain pyramidologists of his time, and i agree that a lot of his conclusions were plain crazy.
my question is this - was the movement he started simply another misguided christian denomination with genuine motives as opposed to what happened after rutherford took over and added all the dogmas?
does russell bear any of the blame for what the wbts has become?.

Penton's book is poorly referenced: Apocalypse Unsubstantiated!
by slimboyfat inof course it goes without saying that penton's apocalypse delayed is the best history of jehovah's witnesses we have (though timothy white's would be the best apart from its age), but i am continually frustrated by his lack of references for key claims.
here is an example where he is talking about reports of drinking in bethel:drinking, then, almost became part of the cult of machismo into which the new workers were quickly inducted.
old bible students such as clayton woodworth and olin moyle objected, and nathan knorr refused to go along with rum-running from canada.

For History Buffs--Photo Drama of Creation Sequence?
by cabasilas ini just obtained a cd of movies and slides of the photo-drama of creation.
it has movies of russell talking and some movies of bible themes.
then there's a narrated slide presentation that appears to match the text of the photo drama book.

Technical info requested on WT printing/binding (any Bethelites out there?)
by cathyk ini'm a bookseller who's delving into the history of book production.
since i'm a collector of wt publications, i'm especially interested in any information available on the following:printers: prior to 1919, most of the books and magazines published by the wts were printed by commercial printers.
i would like to get information on which printers russell and rutherford contracted with.binding: i am interested in any information on suppliers of the bookbinding materials used by the wt.

Was Rutherford Mentally Ill?
by VM44 inin the golden age goodies thread leolaia has posted two letters that were printed in the magazine written by rutherford, one in 1928 and the other in 1938. in both letters rutherford states either that radio "was created by god" or "no man invented radio".. rutherford also goes into his conspiratorial ideas of how the roman catholic church was working with the nazis to overthrow the governments of england and of the usa to bring in a totalitarian fascist government to both countries.. these remarks sound like the ravings of someone who is not mentally all there.. so the question that naturally arises is this: was rutherford mentally ill?.
i believe that he was.. --vm44

Would the Watchtower have 'self destructed' if 1914 had been peaceful?
by AK - Jeff inanother thread sparked this one.. if 1914 had come and gone without the advent of wwi, would the sect of bible students have just faded into the woodwork?.
was the war [obviously heavily referenced as proof of their claims] the bouy that allowed and spurned the growth into what we see today?.
