I once saw a guy stand up during the Watchtower study to share his opinion with the speaker after the first question was asked, without even waiting for the microphone. He was obviously new and had mistaken it for an actual discussion. Before he had finished his first sentence, another Brother went over and sat him down again and the speaker said "This is Brother John, and he'll be happy to answer any questions you may have..."

it seems like every week our PO brings up some group of people who used to be stoned to remind us how much God hates gossips, apostates, those who don't go out in service, whatever
Do "false prophets" ever get a mention?

Question for those raised a JW
by New Worldly Translation ini was wondering if anybody feels like i do that if i hadn't been raised a jw i would never have embraced the religion.
i know it's easier to say in hindsight after i know the truth about the org but honestly i don't think i would have given them the time of day.
i'm not a religious person or even a spiritual person and being a jw always caused a conflict in my mind.

I don't have a great deal of curiosity about any other religions or a desire to join them now, so I can only assume I would have viewed the JWs in much the same way had I not been born into it. On the other hand though, my attitude toward religion in general has probably been influenced quite heavily both by the JWs teachings and by the experience of leaving them. So it's hard to say how receptive I would have been to them (or anyone else who knocked on the door) without having been through all that first.

An Elder Told Me.... Many To Be Disfellowshipped Soon...
by Doubtfully Yours inan elder told me the book is jehovah's latest provision to cleanse his organization.. he said soon all people that have drifted, inactives, and others baptized and not complying with the biblical mandates for a jw, will be visited and given an option to shape up or ship out.. he said that if the person refuses the help offered by the congregation they'll be notified of the date of disfellowshipping and given time to appeal the decision.. he was so happy stating that this way jehovah's organization was preparing for the final clean-up before armageddon.
he sounded so convincing that it almost made perfect sense what he was saying.
i got goose bumps listening to his reasoning.. dy

When the congregations send their monthly report to the WTS, are the inactive ones included in the statistics? If so, getting rid of the inactive ones may be a way to artificially raise the average so those who remain have to aim even higher.

Sounds like the doors of the ark are closing..
And the Lord spake, saying "Are they all inside? Right, fill it with water. Smug gits..."
And there was much rejoicing throughout the land.

The speaker talked about the same ol stuff...at the end, the speaker woke everyone up with, "Oh, and we are pleased to announce..anyone that would like to have a free bible study with JWs can approach one of the attendants tonight."
They must have been reading from the same script at the one I attended. It was something like "We'd like to congratulate those of you who are visiting for the first time. It's fortunate that you are here tonight, because we have a very special announcement. The organization of Jehovah's Witnesses is pleased to announce that any newly-interested ones in attendance here tonight may receive a FREE home Bible study with a fully qualified minister at a time and location of your choice."

Does disfellowshipping work?
by what_Truth? ini am going to conduct a little pseudoscientific experiment here.
my hope is to prove without a doubt that disfellowshipping causes more problems for the jw's than it solves.
to do this i will ask all of you who voluntarily left: .

In my opinion, the DFing thing is where they cross over the line into cult-like behaviour. It's one of the main things that made me not want to be a part of it anymore, even though I was never subjected to it myself.

Man kills seven, himself at church service -- beliefs identical to WTS
by YellowLab inback on march 12th, a 44-year old man in wisconsin walked into a church service and shot & killed seven members, including himself.
the story had made national news.
the article below from the milwaukee journal/sentinel specifically talks about the church he was involved in, namely the worldwide church of god.. my reason for posting this article is this church's striking resemblance to the wts teachings.

I came across this some time ago: http://home.datawest.net/esn-recovery/artcls/lifton.htm
It talks about some of the classic "thought reform" techniques commonly associated with mind-control cults, and how these manifest within the WCG and its offshoot organizations. I found it extremely interesting to note the similarities between their behaviour and that of a certain other religious organization.

I still think it might be the truth - what is wrong with me?
by slimboyfat inapostate literature - i have read the lot.
you name it - c of c, gentile times reconsidered, thirty tears a watchtower slave, the orwellian world of jehovah's witness, apocalypse delayed, and the freeminds and watchtower observer sites, so on and so on.
and i have been reading the posts on this site regularly pretty much since it started, and hourglass before it.

If they can answer it, how can they refuse to answer any question with the response "that's an apostate question"? How can any question in and of itself be apostate?
Because some questions are asked in order to manipulate the other person's thinking, rather than to learn something from their response. They can detect when someone is trying to reprogram them in this manner because they are masters of it themselves.

This whole UN "scandal" has never made any sense to me. It is not the big deal apostates make out.
What I find interesting is how JWs react when they hear about it for the first time. The initial reaction is almost always "No, that's not true. You've either misread something, or it's a lie invented by apostates." You give them the documentation. Long pause. "Well... okay it's true, so what? I see no problem. You're making a fuss about nothing."
So why the first response?
