Fly 2.4 billion light years in 2 minutes
by seattleniceguy inresearchers at the max planck institute have wrapped up the largest supercomputer simulation ever to study the growth of galaxies and black holes.
using 25 terabytes of data, and crunching it for a month, they have produced, among other things, a computer animation that allows you to fly 2.4 billion light years through the universe in about two minutes.. the bright spots in the movies are galaxies.
seeing this movie makes it seem highly dubious that we are the only life in the universe.. the article contains links to three movies.

New single-molecule transistors work at room temperature
by seattleniceguy injust when you thought the ipod was pretty cool, we may soon have devices using one-molecule-wide transistors.
researchers at the national institute for nanotechnology have demonstrated the ability to switch the charge on a single molecule to impede or allow current flow in surrounding molecules.
flipping the gate requires one electron, as opposed to the one million required in current technology.

Why do you post here?
by seattleniceguy infor me, it's mainly the money and the women, i suppose.. no, but seriously, i was thinking the other day about why i post here.
in september it will be two years since i left the organization.
i don't much care for doctrinal debates anymore, and i usually pass on threads that are concerned with he-said-she-said kind of stuff inside the organization.

JW love in action: JWs fail to inform me when roommate of two years dies
by seattleniceguy inwhen i was a witness, i shared a house with an elder/pioneer named herb.
herb was in his eighties, and he had paid off his two-bedroom house long ago, so he would offer the extra bedroom to local brothers.
it was a good deal, and herb got some company at the house, so everyone benefited.. for being in his eighties, herb was exceptionally fit.

Evidence for evolution, Installment 6: The bible requires it
by seattleniceguy inhappy sunday, everyone!
this week we will be breaking from our normal tack of examining scientific evidence, and instead consider the issue from a different perspective.
now, when you consider the number of animal species in the world today, it is clear that there are literally millions more species than could ever have fit into noah's ark.

Rhapsody
by seattleniceguy ini've just signed up for rhapsody, the online subscription music service, and i have to say, it is pretty cool.
for those that are unfamiliar with the service, in a nutshell it is this:listen to any music you want streaming to your computer from their collection of 1 million songs and 60,000 artistsmonthly fee is $9.95purchase tracks to burn to cd for $0.79 each.
first, i have to say that i have never been a fan of real networks, and had i known that rhapsody was their invention before i downloaded, frankly, i may have let that prejudice affect me.
