What exactly makes a movie (or TV series) racist?
by gaiagirl ini was reading the thread about whether "kong" is a racist movie or not, and was interested that some people read racist overtones into the film.
having not seen it yet, i'm not qualified to comment about kong, but wondered what qualities readers look for to determine if a film or tv series is racist.
so what do you think of shows and movies such as: seinfeld, friends, lord of the rings, narnia, etc.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Hilarious extras on the DVD!
by gaiagirl injust watched "monty python and the holy grail" on a two-disc dvd purchased at target.
among the numerous extras are: a very well done animated version of the "we're the knights of the round table....." vaudeville musical number using sets and characters entirely constructed from lego pieces (including the poor fellow in the dungeon, clapping his hands to the music); the scene with the french knights "taunting" the british knights, with japansese dialogue and english subtitles (the translations are hysterical), sing alongs, including the lyrics to the scene with monks chanting and smiting themselves with boards, and too much else to mention.
i haven't laughed so hard since i saw the movie the first time.

No birthday celebrations allowed, but graduation party is OK?
by gaiagirl inthings that make you go "hmmmmm": just learned that an elder i know living near waco, texas is hosting a graduation party for his son.
don't remember ever reading of any faithful christian in the bible ever having such a party.
and to think, all that honor and attention will be focused on a mere human being instead of yhwh.....

Help finding some scriptural references please
by gaiagirl intoday a co-worker asked whether i believed we were living in the "end times" or not, and i explained that i did not, and that christians had believed that they were living in the "last days" since the first century.
the topic drifted, as sometimes happens, and we got to discussing mary.
i explained that i thought i remembered a passage indicating that mary would be exalted to a special position in the "heavenly kingdom".

Your favorite holiday movie(s)?
by gaiagirl intelevision listings and movie theatres are filled with lots of seasonal films now, and many dvds are also available for films from earlier years.
i confess to having a difficult time selecting just one.
among my favorites would have to be christmas vacation, with chevy chase.

"Saved" the movie, does it remind you of any OTHER organizations?
by gaiagirl ini just watched "saved" with mandy moore and makauley culkin, about some kids in a so called "christian" high school.
some of the kids are very, very zealous, others quieter, others openly rebellious.
as the story unfolds, it becomes apparant who those are who are actually observing the teachings of jesus, and who are just giving lip service.

Illustration of burning cities while JW's rejoice?
by gaiagirl ini remember once seeing an older watchtower publication, i believe it was a study book from the late '60s or early '70s, in which one illustration showed a city with large buildings in the background, all burning and in ruins.
in the foreground, a group of well-groomed jw's smile joyously and raise their arms in praise to jehovah, apparantly thanking him for destroying civilization, but at least allowing them to live.
the picture was a little unsettling at the time, and now with the threat of terrorism, even more so.. does anyone remember which publication this image was from?
