HI. My friends daughter is 13 and has been caught doing drugs and has been choking herself until she passes out for the thrill of it. Does any one know where online that I can find some information to help my friend help her daughter stop doing this. She is a beautiful young girl and I hate to see her harm herself like this. Any suggestions?

    Self-Induced Fainting

Question submitted March 9, 2003: What happens and what are the dangers of self-induced fainting?

CyberShrink's answer posted 3-10-03: We assume that you are not writing about fainting that might follow self-induced purging or a behavior that has to do with what used to be called "hysteria". We think you are writing about self-induced strangulation or autoerotic asphyxia which is used to "enhance" sexual stimulation and the experience of ejaculation or orgasm. What happens is that partial strangulation, effected by using a rope (or a scarf) as a noose, with the the free end slipped over a horizontal pipe (or the spindles of a bed headboard) and pulled with a free hand (while the other hand is used for masturbating), reduces oxygen to the brain. Sometimes, body weight, alone, is used to create pressure and this increases the risk of death through unintentional hanging. The reduced oxygen causes light-headedness and then the "fight-or-flight" reaction leads to an adrenaline rush which, for many, is perceived as pleasurable excitement. Even without masturbation, self-induced asphyxia may produce euphoria in some people. Autoerotic asphyxia results in hundreds of deaths every year and these unintended deaths are clearly the most dangerous outcome of this practice. There are other physiological dangers because frequently putting pressure on the carotid arteries, in the presence of other problems (such as arterial plaque) may induce other unintended and serious events. Autoerotic asphyxia should not be confused with masochistic acts because the goal is not to induce pain but to enhance pleasure. You may find the information on the following site to be of interest:
