I wanted to call this thread 'share and share alike' but I didnt want to detract from the subject matter...

I read a post here yesterday about the Watchtower RAND shares, and decided to go on a little factfinding hunt myself..

I couldn't find anything up to date regarding the RAND shares, but about half an hour ago i found a post elsewhere talking about the
Watchtowers shares that were also a charitable gift via HENRIETTA M RILEY TRUST so i branched off my search briefly and found

    this.

I listed names of companies in my post for ease of reading to those who may wish to follow the rabbit hole deeper and find out what

each of these companies deal in. As I dont recognize all of them, and you can have some fun putting a corporate face to each name.

I'm absolutely no expert at all on what any of the figures or other details mean, but I'm fairly certain someone here will understand the

    jargon.

this link provides pdf files for the years 2003 - 2010

and this link is for the most recent pdf

By all means save a file or two to your computer because whole web pages can easily be misplaced

RAYTHEON COMPANY is a big defense contractor. Of no importance to witnesses though, as God's mouthpiece they can hold shares in Phillip Morris and nobody even will blink twice

Forgive me if I'm wrong (I could be - may you all have peace! - so anybody please feel free to correct me), but isn't the WTBTS' position on investing in the stockmarket tantamount to "gambling"? I thought FER SURE someone (with "authority") told me that once. If I'm right, no surprise; if I'm wrong... then I would suggest (hmmmm... let's see)... green energy, solar, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, healthcare equipment... and, well, oil's always good. And maybe GM. Maybe.

    Again, peace to you all!

So the WTBTS are gambling with the brother and sisters money then. I thought this was a no no for any JW? This is a discrace! that they use money for this and from the report posted above they made only around 400k last year in investments, but lost alot more on the stock market.

This religion is taking all active JW'S for fools and just about keeping charity status by saying they are for the public good and it's a education work.

This is a load of steaming u no what! Big buisness is what it is and you fools who are in are helping keep this lie going. This is all about money and nothing else, knocking doors is a smoke screen to avoid paying tax and the WTBTS is hiding behind this facade.

I think this info will be of great interest to the charity commission in the UK and thats just for starters

In view of the risks associated with the stock market, is buying stock the same as gambling? A measure of risk is involved in nearly all financial investments. Some people buy real estate, not knowing if the value of a property will increase or decrease over time. Others deposit their money in a bank, trusting that their savings will be secure. While the stock market is more complicated, simply put, one who invests in stocks buys the shares of a company in the hope that the enterprise will prosper and the stocks will increase in value.
Such an investment differs from gambling because the stockholder has purchased part of a company. These shares may be sold to another person or saved in the hope of future growth. This cannot be said of a person who bets money at a casino or on a game of chance. Against the odds, the gambler seeks to predict an uncertain outcome and win the loser or losers’ stakes.
How much risk should an investor accept? That is up to each individual to decide. Of course, it is not prudent to risk more money on an investment than one is willing to lose.

    It also states the following

By considering the background of a company, an investor can also ensure that his money will not be used to support an unethical enterprise.—See Awake!, February 8, 1962, pages 21-3.

    Facts

You can lose all your money invested unlike banks where you will generally retain your initial investment. Also, investing in real estate means you have bought a physical asset which you rarely lose.

Gains are often made at the losses of someone else unless the shares have always increased in value

There are brokers fees involved (which is the 'houses' take)

In theory you may have purchased a share in part of a company but the irratic behoviour of shares demonstrates that there are times when it has little to do with the value of the company

As for researching a company, there is no way of controlling unethical behaviour or the use of monies for unchristian activities

Unless they become like the Quakers, WTBTS will alway live a double life, of having one foot in,one foot out of their own 'beloved teachings'.

i just read a post on another site about this.

    they said

"it looks like ms riley set up a trust fund to benefit the wtbts in 1948. the proceeds from that trust go to the wtbts but the trustee is comercia bank. i dont know if the wtbts has administrative control over the investments. it may be the bank handles all the investments and sends a check to the wtbts each year and all the society does is cash the check and couldnt change where the money was invested even if they wanted to.

i expect the above is the case, if the society had the choice between getting a small but ongoing payment or taking a substantial lump sum which they could then put to use as they desired, they would take the whole thing. ms riley set the trust up and it continues to operate to this day under her conditions not the society's. "

ok i think i get it, if correct

the shares of phillip morris / altria group (Tobacco company) have gone from the list tho.

as they were on the list back in 2002, in fact looking through them again there have been alot of changes..

could the society not request that they do not recieve funds from organizations against their moral code?

or does that make this all ok now?
