An experienced underground miner who worked for many years in the Burgowan mines at Howard, near Bunderberg. His wife and two children live in Queensland, and he had been travelling between there and Greymouth while working at Pike River. His sister, Veronica Cook, told Australian radio that her family had tried to convince Mr Joynson to quit his career in the mines.
