Computer problems.........

I'm trying to repair my parents pc and wondered if any of the tech-type people on here could give me some pointers......

The problems started about a week ago. Offline the computer works as normal. Online the homepage starts up fine, albeit now with lots of pop-ups. If you try to go to another page the browser hangs. A new tab opens of its own accord trying to access wwwdotleading4dotcom, but the browser hangs not able to access it. A google search found forums with people complaining that this site has a trojan built into it, so I decided not to visit the site on my own computer. This happens using both ie7 and firefox.

I checked the network connections and the computer has connected to the internet but very little information is being sent or received. I tried to access an online virus checker but was unable to connect to it. AVG and adaware scans (both updated recently) failed to find any problems. I tried to roll back to a previous restore point before the problems started but the only ones available are from after the problems started, the computer says it has no previous restore points saved. I've copied the running processes from task manager and according to google all the programs there are meant to be.

I'm a bit stuck as to what to try next. Any suggestions?

    Paul

Likely it will be quicker to reload the OS. OFTEN the spyware once removed breaks the TCP stack as it's sloppy bad code on top of the other problems.

can you block the dotleading site in your internet options to see if it keeps it off long enough to allow you to get to the online scanner?

Try running SuperAntis at this link: http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html Then install Seagate personal fire wall at this link. http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160 And stay off porn site or you will never servive the Big "A"

I had a similar problem about 6 months ago AVG virus scan was able to find the trogan or virus.

But I could never go back to a previous set point. What ever takes over the computer makes the previous set points unavailable.

    Good luck.

    Do the following:

    1. On a good working computer, download these programs and then burn to a CD or USB drive:

    Spybot Search and Destroy

    Webroot (trial)

    2. Install them on their computer and run each program 2-3 times each.

    3. Uninstall any spyware/malware programs from Control Panel/Add Remove Programs; pretty much anything that has a weird name that they do not recall installing. If any doubts google the program/software name.

    4. Run both at least a couple times. Also, go Start, Run, type 'msconfig' (System Configuration Utility) and then click on the start up tab. Once there uncheck any start up items that look suspicious. Once again, if not sure whether its spyware or something useful then please google the name of the start up item and you'll find out if such start up item is valid or not.

    5. Run Webroot and spybot again.

    6. Run any other anti spyware/mal ware software there is. Make sure you uninstall it at the end.
