I debated my JW coworker for hours today. I threw the 1874 teaching into the mix and he said they thaught that for a very, very, very, short time. He might be willing to see old watchtower scans that show the amount of years that the society (or should I say Russell and Rutherford) actually taught the doctrine. Also I would like to become very aquainted with this early history. Any suggestions?

I have some books up to 1927 stating that date. According to Gods Kingdom of a thousand years, 1969 or 1970 something, it was The Truth Shall Make You Free, 1943, that did away with the 1874 date due to a doctrinal change.

So it was for 50 - 70 years they held on to 1874 depending on how you take Franz''s statements.

Freeminds has a good section on doctrines.

Thanks everyone great finds I need to be prepared. Today I gave him the pages in his "Proclaimers book" that state that Russell had been talked into believing the return of Christ in 1874 and that the chronology was changed in 1943. The author of "Captives of a Concept" said that once he reads this that the "bell is rung".
