A Video Shunning Xperience....

My g-daughter and I were in the video store this morning. [She was out of school with a cough and fever - they won't let her back for 24 hours].

As we prepared to check out in comes Sister Rita Righteous. Actually I jest here - Rita has been DF'd three times as a fornicatrix, married out of the 'truth' to a drug dealer, has raised three children who never accepted the religion, and has never, in my 35 years of her acquaintance been 'spiritually minded' or 'active in the service'.

Anyway - I am freshly announced as 'No longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses', and apparently she has heard. She walks in - I say 'Hello' and smile. She totally ignores my greeting, avoids eye contact, and looks down at my 7 year old g-kid and begins to speak with her, as if I am not in the room.

I loudly, but kindly, speak again. She continues to ignore me. I finally make enough noise that she must acknowledge or look foolish at this point. She mumbles a quick hello and moves quickly past us.

How ironic - yet totally jw of this person. I understand her fear in speaking to a 51 year old grandfather accompanying his granddaughter to rent Mary Poppins, whose only sin against the congregation she doesn't even attend as frequently as I get prostate exams, was to accept Jesus as my boss and not a book club in Brooklyn.

WOW. Anyway - I have a 'no shunning policy' on the books. Those that violate it get embarrassed in public along with their religion. In her case I think I will send a nice "You Don't have to Shun me just because I love Jesus" card. Then when she gets to ner next meeting sometime in 2008 she can show it to all her 'friends'. Sheesh.

I think we all need to adopt that policy.

[I thought ~~hoped!~~ you had the actual shunning on video]

I find that the JWs who are more likely to greet a df'd or da'd person are those with more status in the congregation, such as an elder. The lower a person is on the totem pole in the congregation, the closer they are to the boundary, the more likely they are to be seen to have stepped over the line when they greet or acknowledge some who is "out."

I don't think it was that she thought she was so much better than you, Jeff, but that she realized how low her status was and how quickly she could find herself out the door if some JW saw you talking to her.

Interesting thought, Blondie. I must chew that one a little, but it might be on target in some cases at least. Still, the 'hollier than thou' attitude does maintain among most witnesses, doesn't it? How else could one feel who believes he is chosen to watch billions die so that he could inherit the earth?

Sounds like a totally dufos bitch. NO ONE would attempt to speak to my children without acknowledging me. The minute they would have bent down to do that, I would have presented my ass cheeks for them to kiss.

    What assclowns.

Jeff, I take JWs a person at a time. Holier than thou, yes, the organization puts forth that theme. But I don't know what an individual JW thinks or feels until I talk with them or read something they have written. My experience is that JWs on the fringes are even less likely to talk to df'd or da'd people and risk being seen by other JWs. The fact that she talked to the children may be all she could do. I always remember that it wasn't that long ago I was a JW with conflicted feelings.

Hey Jeff, I wonder why the NM37 tract that's receiving such wide distrubution right now doesn't mention the way she treated you? It talks about all the love (that doesn't exist)but doesn't dare mention the shunning. The householder isn't suppose to find out about that until they have dedicated their life to the ORG. Kinda like bait and switch huh? I don't see any difference between JWs today and the Pharasiees of Jesus Day . Same song different verse. seek2find

Agreed Blondie; I was speaking to a dub yesterday and I pointedly mentioned when the subject came up that I didnt believe that the organisation was 'god's' organisation and that they were a destructive cult. I also gave him considerable evidence as to why I believed this to be the case and why I believe that I can never be a part of such organisation again.

His response was telling; technically he should have shunned me due to my views being considered 'apostate' but he in fact didnt; he said I was welcome to talk to him at any time, that he respected my views, that he could see where I was coming from.

My point is that not everyone that is a JW is so die hard, some even share our points of view but simply do not know what to do with them as they arise; I see a considerable benefit in taking each JW individually and assigning merit on that basis.

PS: I love the idea of shunning cards though...hehe.
