Unclear if dead man was bomb suspect-police

LONDON (Reuters) - Police said on Friday it was unclear whether a man they shot dead earlier in the day was one of four people wanted over attempted bomb attacks on London's transport system.

Earlier, Sky television citing security sources reported the man was not one of four who tried to blow up three underground trains and a bus on Thursday.

Police shot the man at Stockwell station in south London on Friday morning. Officers had followed him because he came out of a house under surveillance as part of the investigation into Thursday's attempted attacks, police said.

Later in the day, police released closed circuit television pictures of four men they urgently want to question over the incidents -- apparently failed attempts to repeat deadly bombings mounted two weeks earlier.

"The man shot at Stockwell station is still subject to formal identification and it is not yet clear whether he is one of the four people we are seeking to identify and whose pictures have been released today," police said in a statement.

"It therefore remains extremely important that members of the public continue to assist police in relation to all four pictures."

The police said all deaths related to police operations were a matter of deep regret.

"Nevertheless the man who was shot was under police observation because he had emerged from a house that was itself under observation because it was linked to the investigation of yesterday's incidents," the statement said.

"He was then followed by surveillance officers to the station. His clothing and his behaviour at the station added to their suspicions."

An investigation into the circumstances of his death was under way, it said.

Thursday's attacks caused chaos but killed no one, in marked contrast to the bombings two weeks earlier which claimed the lives of 52 people as well as the four bombers.

So he was under suspicion.....so they follow him, allow him to get to the tube station, apprehend him and then shoot him 5 times from close range. Wow! I suppose it saves all the police work, gaining all those pesky matters of evidence and taking the matter to a jury trial.

Well I was under the impression that he had vaulted a barrier and then run for his life down the platform.

Given the current circumstances im sure thats suspicious behaviour. Why would you do that and then claim total innocence? (eight bombs went off in the last few days, and ALL I did was vault the payment barriers and run hell for leather down the platform, they didnt need to shoot me I didnt have a bomb)

that was my first reaction too. But later bulletins have said that they are trained to do that if they are sure that he may have bombs on his person.- This guy failed to stop when commanded to and was muffled up on a summers day. What was beneath?

Another bulletin said they learned this from Israeli forces dealing with similar situations

I cannot see in this present situation that they would risk their reputation by taking life lightly, time will tell

Thats was the day before.......when one of the 4 made off etc. (so it was an entirely different set of circumstances i.e. different day..different location....different asian dude) This guy was followed from his home and executed. Don't know why they let him get so far...or why didn't they arrest him. Hey but it shows we kick ass though doesnt it? ISP
