BLOOD -- WTS Questions and Sound Answers 8
Do JWs "pour out" blood?
The WTS says:
"Blood is not to be stored; it is to be poured out--returned to God, as it were." (Anonymous, Questions From Readers, The Watchtower, Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, Inc. 2000 10/15: 30) (Underlining added)
The WTS also says:
"Jehovah's Witnesses abstain from blood" -- Anonymous, The Pure Language Unites a Great Crowd of Worshipers, The Watchtower, Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, Inc., 1991 1/15: 29 (Underlining added)
But the WTS admits that JWs accept all fractions from any components of blood. The WTS says for JWs:
"I accept all fractions derived from any primary component of blood." -- Acceptable line item from Durable Power of Attorney provided by the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society for JWs, 2003
Since JWs say they abstain from blood and since JWs accept all fractions derived from any primary components of blood then JWs believe that the fractionated components they accept are not blood! If one accepts this then the remaining fractionated components left over after this process are not blood either, because just as the part taken is a fraction of the whole so too is the part they would throw away!(1) Since, according to WTS teaching, these left over fractions are not blood then when this material is discarded what is thrown away is not blood -- they are not throwing away blood by "pouring it out".
Do JWs pour blood out? Not according to what the WTS teaches.
So, if a JW wants to say they pour out blood then they must be able to answer the question "Which one is the blood?" Is it the fraction taken or the fraction thrown away? If the fraction used is not blood then the remaining fraction is not blood either because both are fractions.

1. An example of this is the apheresis donation of platelets. This is a process where a person donates only platelets. When platelets are fractionated wound-healing components can be extracted. But just as these wound-healing components are fractions of the whole platelets, the left over components from this process are likewise fractions of the whole platelets.
