Announced at Service Meetings this week:

The WTS will be phasing out hard-bound bibles for the public begining later this year.

JWs will still be able to order hard-backs for themselves, but hard-bound bibles will not be made available to the public after current stocks are depleted.

Soft cover bibles will have a paper cover similar to other publications produced by the WTS.

Pocket-size bibles with fake leather covers are to be discontinued entirely and will only be available in paperback.

We are a long way from pig-skin folks.

So are they going to get rid of the regular-sized leather ones?

All I can say is cheap and tacky. They'll have to replace their bibles every year or so.

any dumbass knows that all the "good and spiritually mature" witnesses pay 50 bucks to have their bibles rebound, and have their name and baptism date stamped in the cover.

But really- Paperback bibles? thats a low to blow to "god's" word. Really shows where they rank the bible....

The Gideon Society has been putting out paper back Bibles for a long time. The ones I have (from grade school and another from college) are still in quite good condition. But they haven't been put through the same rigours as a JW's Bible would be put through.

I can't help but wonder what some of the older JW folks must be thinking of all this cheapening of the publications. It used to be a source of pride to offer hardbound publications To Cover The Cost of Printing™ for a mere 25¢, 50¢ (for the Truth Book and the God's Kingdom of 1000 Years Book, respectively) back in the 70s, when paperback trash like Harlequin Romances were going for $2-$3 a pop. It must be like thinking that you've invested in a blue chip stock, only to find out that it was really Nortel.

It's really kind of sad when you think of all the, ahem, "simplifications" since they went to donations only:

-- No more real leather binding on Bibles

-- Now, no more hard cover Bibles

-- All new books are paperback

    -- No subscriptions

-- No food service at assemblies

    -- Awake to become monthly

Any predictions on what is next to go?

I'll say bound volumes will be next on the chopping block, now that the WT Library CD is updated annually.

The melody for The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" is going through my head now.... but the words are going "Paperback Bibles.... Paperback Bibles!"

That's the point, the more the r+f replace their bibles, the more they'll donate.

    Lets see here....
If I have to carry my paperbound bible to 5 meeting a week, plus 10(ish) hours of field service, it is sure to wear out eventually. Then I will "donated" $5-$10 for my new one next year. While I am doing so, WTBS can be changing little details, just like in their other publications.
Someday, they will announce that only the paperbound books should be used, and to discard all hardcover books. This way the 'new light' can be added as needed.
Friends, is it not wonderful that Jehovah has given us this extra helping of undeserved kindness?"
