Google Books has a new listing for the 1891 volume of The National Stenographer and J.F. Rutherford of Boonville, Missouri is mentioned on a couple of pages. The book can be found here:

JFR is mentioned on pp. 274-275. His picture is on page 391 of the PDF that you can download from Google Books. By my calcuations, he was only 22 when this picture was taken. For those who may have problems downloading, I have put the pages that mention JFR and his picture at this filesharing site:

Perhaps those of you with photoshop experience could improve the picture quality?

Wow. It really doesn't look like him to me. Just very young, I guess.

    Great find cabasilas.

The young Rutherford! Wouldn't have recognized it as him at first glance.

Looking harder you can see his chin is somewhat the same as in his later photographs.

Wow, that's awesome. Doesn't look much like him either (is that a mustache?), but it has to be him -- Boonville, Missouri court stenographer. Notice his hairline is starting to recede. It's easy to forget that he was already middle-aged when he became president of the Society and all the photos we have were taken in his later years.

The witness on p. 274 btw is David R. Francis, governor of Missouri and later Secretary of the Interior under President Cleveland.

That is something. I remember the 1975 yearbook making much of his shorthand taking ability.

    Thanks again for this.

I've messed around in Paintshop, but I can't seem to improve it by an awful lot.

I'm afraid we'd have to get an actual copy of the journal to get a better quality picture. Unfortunately, it is rather rare. There are just nine locations listed, including on in Scotland, along with Yale University Library, Newberry Library, New York State Library, Cleveland Public Library, and Los Angeles Public Library.

Yes, just searched the British Library database, and they don't have it.

Leolaia what was the link that you used to find the Scotland reference? Maybe they do digial delivery like the British Library. I can give them a call.

It's at the National Library of Scotland. Just do a search:
