How Do We Respond to the WTS on the UN?

Oh hello, just little old me.

I want to talk about and ask a question about the Watchtower's "spin" in the UN fiascao.

Based on my review of the case, there are 2 "spins" that need to be "counterspinned".

These WTS "spins" that deserve responses are:

    1) The Watchtower did not keep this UN "association" a secret and the leaders were not hiding anything.

    2) The Watchtower used this "association" to help promote its educational and voluntary work through out the world. We only considered the support of the UN charter in help our brothers get their religious freedom

So what are your answers to these two questions especially question 1. Obviously, an answer to question 2 is showing reams of WT articles showing Witesses disfellowshipped for waving the flag etc. An answer for Question 1 may be true they may not have been hiding the facts but that they did not officially tell any Witness in their magazines and they were slamming Witnesses who engaged in non-neutral activites and slamming the UN as well (ie. the Theocratic War Strategy).

I look forward to your "counterspin defences". They may find their way into a newspaper or two.

Hi Hawk. Im afraid that they have another spin as well. I hope to have proof in a few days. If what I think is true, then they will have sunk to an all time prevaricating low. I will keep in touch.

The Society will not use spin #1. They have already said the membership was not secret and was used for library access. The plead ignorance to what was a necessary compromise of their principles to have been a member and withdrew immediately when they claim these came to light.

The Society will not use spin #2 because it is too disturbing to its members.

They instead will stick to what they have said and will not comment further in the hopes the issue will disappear. And as more time ticks by, the issue is disappearing quickly.

What needs to be proven is the Society knowingly compromised its principles to gain status and influence on the world scene. I think there is sufficience circumstancial evidence to indicate that to a thinking person, but proving it with reasonable certainty is difficult.

I think that they will stay silent and just trust in the R & F to instigate their imprinted "argumentum ad hominem" routines.

The Watchtower do have a huge problem with either "spin". I made a search on the Watchtower 99 CD, and "AidAfrique" - which is (one of) an organization, a NGO used by the Watchtower. Not mentioned with one word.

The only mentioning of aid work is more or less in the yearbooks. Their connection to the UN is NOT mentioned anywhere in the literature, and was completely unknown to all JWs.

The fact they ran like hell as soon as Guardian printed their article shows they didn't feel good about this at all - and no excuses are good enough.

This is a no win situation for them. They can claim they have done some good, but they have done so by violating their own rules. They can say this is not political, but no JW will really buy that - even though they will pretend they do.

So, I think the latest article by our friend from The Guardian pretty much sums it all up! A fantastic article! Thanks for telling about it - it's naturally on the Watchtower Observers first page :))

    1) The Watchtower did not keep this UN "association" a secret and the leaders were not hiding anything.

What the WT did keep secret was there duplicity with the UN. They wrote supporting articles in the Awake magazine. Usually these articles had the following format. The article would identify the problem, then show what the UN is trying to do to ameliorate the situation, then they would show how much they had failed. Then they would make a brief comment that only God's Kingdom would totally solve the problem. Meanwhile in the WT magazine, they would publish derogatory articles, say that the UN was a disgusting thing, a counterfeit organization, inspired by the Devil himself.

The average JW would consider the WT as the food from the FDS, and would continue to believe the WT had made no change in its agenda.

    2) The Watchtower used this "association" to help promote its educational and voluntary work through out the world. We only considered the support of the UN charter in help our brothers get their religious freedom

I am sure the information is available without awarding allegiance to the UN. After all, some 1500 NGOs are promoting UN projects thru out the earth. They could have contacted any NGO on whatever specialty it was promoting and become inundated with information.

Spin: “To provide an interpretation of (a statement or event, for example), especially in a way meant to sway public opinion: “a messenger who spins bogus research into a vile theology of hatred” (William A. Henry III).”

I don’t think we want to “spin” this issue. To do so is to resort to the Wt.’s loathsome tactics. Lets state the facts and let the chips fall where they will.

    Dunno Hawk...

I still maintain my original thoughts on the subject:

1.) If a JW is really curious about the truth, he will see the UN issue for what it is, and we won't have to counteract their spin.. He will see the hypocrisy no matter what the WT officials say.. This information can only help JW's that want help...

2.) If a JW isn't looking for the truth, but is still fully indoctrinated in the JW mindset, he'll take anything that the GB says (Including something like; God told us to do it) as gospel, and not even think twice about it. His mind will be closed, and that will be it!!! At best, it may plant a seed that later may grow in this case..

3.) This information needs to be somehow presented like the Dateline show on their Child Abuse stuff... Then the information will be of the most help, it will warn unsuspecting 'worldlings' or the dangers of this religion... Open up the eyes of the 'targets' and the witnesses will have a problem converting new people. Once that starts to happen, the WTBTS will modify their tactics, and as a result, their doctrines, and maybe just maybe be forced to be a little more 'main-stream'..

I can picture in my mind what would happen if people found out about their 'theocratic warfare strategy'..

    Knock-Knock..

    Hello, can I help you..

Good morning, I'm here to tell you about the promise of everlasting life...

    Oh, are you Jehovah's Witnesses?

    Yes maam, we are.

Oh, I saw something on TV about you.. It said something about the fact that you practice this weird form of 'rationalized' lying called 'theocratic warfare strategy'. It's where you lie or don't tell the whole truth to me in order to teach me the truth... Thanks, but no thanks <door slams in face>..

After a rash of these occurances, the GB will be forced to do something.. And considering that telling the whole and real truth would send any rational human being screaming, "Huh? You call this the good news? I have to shun my family, ditch my friends, can take blood depending on what the latest 'light' says, can't have a beard if I want to be a MS or Elder?... No Thanks, I'll choose door #2"

So, the only way the GB would be able to address this issue would be to evolve, much like the Catholic Church did in the 14th century.. In the 14th century, the catholics used to DF and shun people, too!!!
