Is "Gog of Magog" Satan?

For as long as I can remember, Eze 38 was, and still is, an end-times prophecy about how Satan would come up against JWs because JWs would be "dwelling in security" (Ez. 38:14) after all the other religions are destroyed. This is pretty much the most terrifying chapter in the Bible for me, understanding it as JWs do. The JW reasoning is that since there is no historical person who matches the description of "Gog of Magog", then it must be Satan (as the Insight book on page 981 puts it: "the name Gog is evidently cryptic of symbolic, not being that of any know human king or leader.")

But is this so? What happens to Satan at the end? Rev 20:2,3 says "And he siezed the dragon, the original serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. And he hurled him into the abyss and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him." Now, look at Ez 39:11: "And it must occur in that day that I shall give to Gog (Satan, according to JWs) a place there, a burial place in Israel, the valley of those passing through on the east of the sea, and it will be stopping up those passing through. And they will have to bury Gog and all his crowd." The Insight book says: "This burial in a deep place by the Dead Sea likewise finds some parallel in Revelation's description of the disposal of the opposers of God's Kingdom by their being case into the symbolic lake of fire, and by the abyssing of Satan."

So, is Gog of Magog Satan? First, Ezekiel talks about people burying Gog. Revelation says it's an angel who bounds Satan and throws him bound in chains into the abyss. Ezekiel goes on to say in 39:12 that the burying of Gog and his crowd would happen for seven months and 39:13 says "all the people of the land will have to do the burying". Again, Revelation says it's an angel who does it.

    Thoughts?

I dunno, but wondering what kind of parent would name their kid 'Gog' esp if you lived in 'Magog'?

If it IS Satan, no wonder he turned out so evil; just imagine the torment he got from the other kids....

I found an interesting reference in my google search,

. . . But, for some reason, 'Gog and Magog' became a nation or nations, with a life of their own, separate from their Biblical source. They passed into the romantic legends of Alexander the Great, which have been rife in Asia since the time of Alexander himself. They appear in the Koran, which has its own version of the Gog and Magog story; from these sources, they spread into common currency and become part of the Old World's travel myths--fables which spread among educated men, during those centuries when most of the earth was still terra incognita. - Sylvia at the University of Calgary

I've discarded the concept of a Satan, because I can see no benefit in believing in one. The belief either becomes a paralyzing influence or is used as an excuse for despicable behavior. I've been the object of such unreasoning fear. How can I fight an invisible demon, generated in the inflamed thoughts of a deceived observer?

On the other hand, there's plenty of evidence of evil. I'd like the true perpetrators - people gone bad - to be blamed.

So you're half-way there, as you're willing to throw out almost ALL of the supernatural crapola found in the Bible.

However, you DO realize that you could simply replace the word 'Satan' with 'God', and your statement would be just as true?

    eg:

I've been the object of such unreasoning fear. How can I fight/worship an invisible spirit, generated in the inflamed thoughts of a deceived observer?

    Just sayin'....

Who Will Lead Gog ’s Attack?

11Gog of Magog is identified as Satan the Devil in his debased position since 1914. As a spirit creature, he cannot carry out his attack directly, but he will use human agencies to do his deeds. Who will these human agencies be? The Bible does not give us details, yet it does give us certain indications that can help us to identify who they will be. As world events unfold in fulfillment of Bible prophecies, we will gradually get an ever clearer picture. Jehovah’s people avoid speculation but remain spiritually alert, fully aware of political and religious developments that fit into the framework of the fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

12 The prophet Daniel sheds light upon a final attack against God’s people, writing: “He [the king of the north] will certainly go forth in a great rage in order to annihilate and to devote many to destruction. And he will plant his palatial tents between the grand sea and the holy mountain of Decoration.”—Daniel 11:44, 45.

    WT says:

As a spirit creature, he cannot carry out his attack directly, but he will use human agencies to do his deeds.

Soooo, according to WT, Satan and his demons cannot attack humans directly, but the JWs also believe that these same invisible forces will try to rape women while they're sleeping? M'may....

Perhaps the Police should be notified after one of these attempted rapes, to give a description of the suspect. I mean, if the suspect HAS to be flesh and blood, they SHOULD be able to find the human(s) that Satan must use to carry out his attacks.

Sometimes you have to wonder how JWs can be so "unthinking" (I'm trying my best NOT to say 'stupid') as to swallow any of this....

: Is "Gog of Magog" Satan?

I believe you are confusing "Gog of Magog" with the "Tooth Fairy," and "Satan" with "Santa."

Remember that Blondie is only reporting, not supporting. I grew up during the gag you with Gog every book study period. All this is open to some new interpretation by the WTS and other religions. Opinions are like aXXholes, everyone has one.
