I just saw a DVD on the possible scientific explanation for the Star of Bethlehem and found it quite interesting. Though it is a pro-Christian viewpoint, I think the explanations use science and chronology to come to this explanation of whether the Star was fact or fiction. The website is:

    www.bethlehemstar.net

I was fascinated with it...what do you think?

I aways thought Satan was responsible for the "star".

That's what I always thought Nathan...that is what I found so interesting, that there is actual science in its appearance.

I watched a documentary recently where it looked into the astronomical reasons for the "star".

The most logical theory was that the "star" was actually two planets, Jupiter and Saturn, I think. They were moving in such a way that the magi ("wise men") interpreted them as indicating the birth of a king. They followed the planets' movements to Bethlehem.

The WTS demonises the magi by saying the magi dabbled in astrology. The documentary pointed out that 2 thousand years ago, astronomy and astrology were one and the same thing. It wasn't until the modern age that astronomy became an actual science.

Hi BP...that is similar to what this documentary points to, except it is the convergence of Venus and Jupiter that created the "Star". It also goes into other celestial phenomena that help to pinpoint the time and give weight to the theory around the Star and the Magi using it to "find" Jesus. The documentary points out that by the time the Magi found Jesus he was most likely a toddler and not a baby in a manger.

I did find some of the "coincidences" shown in the presentation quite remarkable!
