Question from a recent JW Wake
by robhic ini used to be involved with a woman who was a (not very good) jw.
we hadn't seen each other for a few years and last month her sister called me to inform me she had died.
she had been living in a nursing home for years so this event was not unexpected.

Your "Good Hope" money pledges (1917)
by TJ - iAmCleared2Land inon another thread, we discussed the instruction from the society (surrounding kh financing) to pass around scraps of paper on which the publishers could put "pledges" for planning purposes.
found this today while examing the older mags.
seems this practice isn't new.

The Dead Sea Scrolls The Essenes and their Latrines
by outoftheorg ini recall and i am sure some of you will recall, being told by the wbts about how jehovah gave the jewish nation a strict set of rules as to how and where to build latrines for them to use and how this lent to giving the jewish people the reputation of being a cleaner group than the other nomads in the area.. they were to dig trenches to a strict depth and distance from the camp sites and cover the trenches as they filled and how pleasing it was to see that jehovah made them safe from sickness etc.. in todays paper an article from the los angeles times by thomas h. maugh, this very item is brought to light.
with a verry different direction as to its effects on the lives of those who lived in the manner they were told to.. "toilet practices support theory that the dead sea scrolls were written by by a small jewish sect known as the essenes" .
archeologists have discovered the latrines used by the essenes.

'Whoever changes religion - kill him.'
by Gill inthis morning's times had a article that reminded me a little of the jw view on apostates, or people who change their beliefs.. 'whoever changes religion - kill him'.
ruth gledhill (religious correspondent).
the koran is contradictory on the fate of those who deny the truth of islam.. fourteen passages refer to apostasy and, of these, seven refer to punishment, generally to be given in the next life.. sura 40 says that those who reject the scriptures will have iron collars and chains placed around their necks, be dragged into scalding water and burnt in the fire.

Interesting Book
by robhic ini just bought this book -- "the end of faith" by sam harris -- and found myself agreeing with almost every paragraph.
it is about religion as a bad thing -- "religion, terror, and the future of reason" -- and would probably be more for the atheists than anyone still involved in a religion but it does make some good points.
it is about all religions, not jw but it includes all religions in its sights.. i'd have to practically re-write the entire book to give examples of parts i liked, but i'll copy this one as a taste:.

Interesting while reading
by robhic ini am reading the musician sting's autobigraphy "broken music.
" at one point when worried about his ability to financially support his family he found that praying helped.. now, being raised catholic he resorted to catholic prayers and praying techniques.
he found praying the rosary helpful but for an interesting reason.
