Heavy sigh.
children raised as JWs are victims because they are being taught to be prejudiced. Not just of homosexuality but a whole host of other things. The JWs have a distorted view of a vast range of things beyond sexuality.
But this cartoon is about teaching prejudice against homosexuals, not adulterers, theives or gluttons. I'm not shocked by it, I've never said I was outraged, nor have I said it should be banned (I've not even waved my hands our flounced).
i stand by the statement that this is cartoon designed to instill prejudice against homosexuals in JW children and I think that's homophobic. I think the Bible's homophobic too.
I sincerely hope you will survive me thinking differently from you.

If the "video still sends out an unhealthy and distorted message about human sexuality" I'd say it is designed to incite prejudice. It's not a crime.

You make a good point, I can and should be more active about such matters. But, as I said, I'm a biologist. Politicians get paid handsomely (c. £70,000pa in UK, basic pay!) to deal with such issues. It's their full-time job.
Politicians respond to voters, if you don't talk to them they don't have to do anything. If you're not actively doing anything LUHE, surely, by your own reasoning you are tolerating atrocities.
I find"being a biologist" a rather hilarious excuse for inaction.

I've never once said the video should be banned. I've just said its homophobic and it should be exposed as such.
Some people get quite hysterical and hand wavey over the use of the word homophobia.

I'm in favour of military action against homophobic extremists.
So, you don't do anything active in support of LGBTQ communities that are victims of hatred or violence?
I haven't spoken out of turn here. It's called freedom of speech. I won't be intimidated by you or anyone else.
Apologies if you feel intimidated, that's not my intent. I'm trying to understand motivation and close interest in LGBTQ persecution.
What have been the outcomes of these campaigns/discussions?
Most of the time it has been awareness raising but with a growing number of out politicians it's becoming a lot easier.
isn't there a danger of progressives outliving their usefulness when they tolerate gay people being killed by homophobic extremists?
It's this I don't understand. Who are these progressives that are tolerating the murder of gay people? Lack of opinion pieces in Pink News does not equal with toleration, and they certainly cover news of it although it's almost always difficult to verify the truth: are the individuals murdered even gay or is that just an excuse? ISIS trade in women is also appalling, are there enough opinion pieces on that to satisfy you?

Interesting. How do you actually support military action?
However, it's not my job to raise the plight of victims of homophobic extremists.
So while doing hardly anything is it your job to tell others that they are not doing enough or not doing it properly?
What are you doing to raise the plight of vicitims of homophobic extremists?
I've met with and written to MPs and MEPs on the subject and campaigned to prevent gay asylum seekers being returned to dangerous countries. I probably don't do enough but I certainly don't go around pointing fingers at others telling them that they are doing it wrong.
And it's not my job to to it either.
Are you in direct contact with Pink News to tell them they aren't outraged enough?

The point is that he didn't think it was racist language just like some people want homophobia to be strictly defined as violence against or fear of. It's more subtle than that just like racism can be.
The JW cartoon provides the context that perpetuates stigma against same sex couples. Yes it's consistent with their past and their interpretation of the Bible but that doesn't make it any less depressing for anyone struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.
But Simon while I'm sure you will continue to see this as another overreaction, I wish you all the best.
