"Americans are taught that the United States is the greatest nation on earth. The Richest. The land of the Free and the home of the Brave. We are taught that we are the most generous and charitable nation. That anyone man can become president. That anyone can become wealthy. That we have freedom of speech and worship without fear of retribution. The most beautiful and diverse melting pot of ethnicity. The statue of liberty says give us your poor and wretched." You got to laught at that. The only thing that is true is the richest. But not in relation to population, there are many nations smaller that The US but with higher average incomes. "I can move from California, to Nevada, to Texas, to New York, to Vermont, etc...etc..etc... The US is made up of 50 separate countries. The EU is really a clone of the United States.' You're being very misleading there. These states have never been separate countries with their own government language and culture. The point anyway is that there are freedoms enjoyed by other nations as great or greater than the US. Another example we have a National Health Service in Britain. Health care is free for everyone. Now that?s a powerful freedom. The Dutch have Drugs and brothels the Germans can speed doen their motorways at whatever speed they like. And the list goes on.

What are Americans taught about U.S and what do you really believe?
by sleepy injust wondering what exactly americans (u.s.a) are taught about their country in school .do you really salute a flag, do you swear allegiance to the country.
are you taught that you fought for freedom, and that america is the land of the free, etc etc?
do you actually believe what you are taught?

No American poster yet, has really established how their freedoms are greater than others. You could say you have a unique set of freedoms, but so do other countries. And its no big deal to compare the freedoms you enjoy to third world countries and dictator ships.
If America is truly what many proclaim it to be there must be some obvious example.
Note for example, in the EU you can live and work in any country.
I could leave Britain tomorrow and move to Italy and get a job, no questions asked, I could if bored move to Spain, or Germany. Or any other EU country. That?s a very valuable freedom.
My wife is French, she lives in Britain and works there, and there is absolutely no procedure she had to go through to do this. Just turn up and get on with it.
But do you see the EU nations boasting, "We are the land of the free"?
For those who don?t know otherwise "anyone" can be a millionaire in most countries.
Also note those who fled religious persecution to the new world in the 1600 and 1700's were fleeing to a British ruled colony.
The war against Britain was a war for self-rule for the settlers; this has a slightly different connotation than a war for freedom, which implies enslavement.
And any freedoms were for the settlers not the native people, who?s land was taken from them, and who?s descendants now live in reservations.
And of course lets not forget that slavery was abolished in Britain and other European countries ages before the U.S.A.
By the way I have no problem with The US, I just don?t like the idea of institutionalised nationalism that teaches a countries in subtle ways it is superior to others, when clearly it is not. -

Aalena I disagree. 1.I haven?t really mentioned American government. I did mention what I have heard American president says and asked whether this was a prevailing viewpoint. 2.What have I generalized about? Having said a certain point of view comes across from American media, and asked whether Americans believe that to be true? 3.What points have I been reasoned on and have dismissed? 4.As to offering solutions to a problem, if a majority of Americans don?t see their country as superior to theirs there isn?t one. I would suggest though that the American media do not show so much bias, and do their country a disservice by misrepresenting them.

"No, Sleepy.. America is free because it goes to great lengths to protect the rights and liberties of it's citizens. Our Bill of Rights, where the right to bare arms is mentioned among 9 other liberties/rights, was stated as an example of why we consider ourselves a democracy based on freedoms." And other democracies don't do this? The point being do you really believe your "freer" than everyone else? In which way has any of this been an emotional aurgument on my part exactly?

"If the people in America feel that things must be changed, then they will change them. It takes time for these changes to occur, though. It does not happen overnight. "
Yes , but that's no different than any other democracy!
