  Bulger killers release - just?

  with the news that the killers of jamie bulger have been released, it would be interesting to know how people feel.. from the mcveigh thread it seems that many americans believe the death penalty would have been appropriate.. i do not know whether many in the us know of the case in britain of a 2 year old being tortured and murdered by two 10 year olds.

  but now 8 years later they have been released.. i know of the arguments that they have been rehabilitated since killing jamie bulger.....but is this really justice?

  The death penalty neednt be cruel like slavery or whatever - please try and think and not ibntroduce nonsensical strawmen. - if you put it that way you are actually on the slave herders side in this argument.

  Think more deeply about this. I'm not equating death penalty to slavery, for they have many differences. I'm merely pointing out the historical trends against violence, and the death penalty will one day be seen as the act of barbarism that it is.

  This is not a nonsensical strawman, but a serious historical parallel. Two hundred years ago people laughed at the idea of slavery being cruel, for slaves weren't considered to have the same rights as other people, or even the same feelings. Today we have serious and intelligent people who seem to feel that rehaibilitation is impossible, and they want to react, not think, each time a life is taken. That is no way to have a civilized society, and any society built on violence will fail (eventually).

  I hope your barbaric world where sadistic murders are rewarded never comes to pass.

  It will. History is on my side.

  A hundred years from now, when capital punishment is but a memory on this earth (unless certain religions still hold sway over national policy), people will look back on the death penalty the way we look back on slavery.

  Slavery had its proponents too, and lots of reasons why it was a good idea, and even scriptures that could be pointed to. Didn't matter. It was a cruel and barbarous policy. Same thing with death penalty. Violence begats violence. People learn what they are taught. Once the death penalty is finally gone, violence will drop.

  What is beauty to me? Primarily the inner person. I wish I could say I'm not so shallow as to care about the outward appearance, but alas, I do care somewhat. I'm flexible, and will bend quite a bit in that area, but there has to be some spark, some connection on a physical level.

  That said, I really do care more about the inner person. I've known some "plain" folks who have become beautiful to me after I got to know them. And I've known some "beautiful" persons who became ugly in my eyes as I saw who they were inside.

  What I like:

  Intelligence.
  Humor.
  Easy-going nature.
  Loyalty.
  Loving and demonstrably affectionate.

  What causes lust in me:

  All of the above coupled with an openness about sexuality.

  What I don't care about:

  Money.
  Status.
  Emphasis on surface matters.
  Talking about people, rather than talking about ideas.

  ...and that's how you keep a Tigger happy! :)

  Uh huh, and then someone can hunt down that killer, and kill him. And then someone can hunt down the next person and kill them. And then...

  I was thinking the exact same thing. By not having moderation on this board, the problem eventually sorted itself out, and people learned some lessons that will benefit them in the future. Instead, had moderators been stamping out fires left and right, feelings would have been hurt, outrages would have been raised, and nothing would have been solved. Just more problems.

  We're almost all adults here. Treating us as adults works.

  OK, time for a little thought experiment. Let's play a What If scenario. What if (if, get it?) it were possible to completely rehabilitate a killer, such that you were guaranteed that not only was he or she genuinely and thoroughly cut to the heart over their crime, but that it was also guaranteed that he or she would never commit another crime again.

  In such a scenario, what would you say should be done with such a convicted murderer? And why would you say that?

  just so certain ladies do not feel alone in cringedom i will confess my red-cheekers !.

  i was a well-developed 15 yr old getting too volupteous for my school uniform ( ok too fat then) and the zip had bust on my only school skirt.

  my mum replaced it using an old zip from another garment which happened to be quite a bit longer than a normal skirt zip.an unmarried brother came to visit one morning and was sat in our living room having a cuppa while i was frantically getting ready for school.

  Not having ample boobs, nor having ever worn a skirt, I can't quite relate a story like those. The closest I ever got wasn't all that bad. You know how guys are always checking to make sure their zipper is up? Well, this is why:

  I was on my way to work one summer morning. Got on the bus and sat down in one of those seats that faces a bench of seats opposite. My mind was absent-mindedly thinking of stuff, not noticing the little old ladies across from me. They got off at their stop and I kept going. Only then, finally, did I notice my zipper was down, and had been down since I put my pants on that morning. Evidently I was in a rush, and forgot that step. Not only was the zipper down, but the way I was sprawled out on the seat the zipper was as wide open as you could get.

  I like to say that my little friend wanted to see the sights that day. In any case, I'm not sure if I gave a show to the little old ladies or not, and yes, I was wearing underwear so there was a limit to the thrill they could have had, but still...

  Francoise, good words (well, I don't ever agree to capital punishment, but other than that part of your message, I agreed with what you said).

  For what it's worth, I'm surprised those boys got out of prison so soon. I don't have any of the facts, but I suspect I would have wanted them kept in prison longer.

  I understand your reluctance to discuss what you and I have discussed ad naseum in the past. However, if on the odd chance you were thinking I was suffering from liberalism, you have also made an incorrect assumption about me.

  My interest in the subject of capital punishment is on a deeper plane than mere conservative or liberal ideas. You will find I am not as easily categorizable as you may have guessed from my, admitedly few, postings on the subject.

  Thank you for taking the time to express why. Three thoughts:

  1. I merely asked you for your reasons, not demanded. So of course you had the right to just express an opinion and nothing else.

  2. I have not forgotten the victim of the crime, and nothing I said should have given that impression. That is paramount in my mind. I am capable of keeping the victim and his family in mind while I discuss a societal problem.

  3. I am not a bleeding heart liberal. I'm not even an liberal, for that matter. It's easy to pass judgments on others just because you disagree with them. Getting the judgments correct is a much harder matter.

  Thank you for expressing your thoughts. I understand your point of view much better.
