AnnOMaly, I was under the impression that Job was actually based on much older non-Hebrew texts, but must recheck references. Hey, eveyone likes a good story, right?

Major goof in the Sept 1 WT article on Babel and the origin of languages
by marmot injust wanted to point out something that another poster brought up in the thread on the agm rumours, the writing department included a photo of a cuneiform tablet in their article on the origin of languages with a caption that states it is from 3000 bc.
this would pre-date the global flood myth and the fanciful tower of babel story altogether, hah!.

Great music. What's wrong with the audience? Are they all doing 'ludes' or just busy with their iPhones?

@Shirley: that's where I thought you were heading... I feel like a third wheel. Carry on. I need to dig up all the old threads about Job now. Thanks.

Shirley, when was Job written? I seem to recall some earlier threads that suggest from the langauge that it was actually one of the oldest texts. Certainly not Hebrew. But yes, I get the whole 'sphere/circle' thing.

And I don't see anything pedantic about what GoodStein pointed out. He was just stating the facts. Aren't we all interested in what is true and what is not?
Just added: my mistake to assume Goodstein is male.

If you are interested in Sumeria, take a look at the book: The Sumerians, Their History, Culture and Character by Samuel Noah Kramer. He includes an interesting aside regarding a possible connection between the name 'Shem' and Sumer by his teacher and colleague Arno Poebel published (and largely ignored) in the American Journal Of Semetic languages in 1941. It starts on page 297. He was curious given their pre-eminence and influence at the time, why there is no mention of them in the bible.
My own thought was that it was just more evidence that the Hebrew scriptures were written long after everyone had forgotten that the Sumerians even existed.

Do Witnesses Have Any Aspirations Anymore?
by minimus inwhen i was a kid, my family wanted me to reach out for any type of "privilege", whether it be cleaning the rest room or being an attendant.
obviously, reaching out to be a ministerial servant and elder were high on the list.. since college was a no no, we were to aspire to be something within the congregation.. i wonder if anyone aspires to be anything in the organization, at this point in time..

I think a lot of them would like to win the lottery. Indirectly of course (ahem) since they are not allowed to participate. But if Aunt Bess were to win, surely she would like to shower a bit of cash our way, right? Unless of course we were shunning her since she no longer accepted every bit of drivel from the GB.

There is so much wrong with that article, I don't even know where to begin. But let's throw this out there for a start.
If everyone before the event was speaking the same language (according to JW history this has to be sometime after 2370BC(E)) and the idea behind this was to thwart mankinds attempts to advance, how could a new group speaking Egyptian build the great pyramids before Abraham got there?
