Yet another item about funds. The mixed messages here have never been so exposed. Time and time again we are told change is for anything but financial need yet the begging continues.

CO Comes Up With A New Way To Be Judgemental...

at the latest co visit something very strange happened.

during the meeting with the elders and servants he passed out a copy of a hypothetical publisher card and asked us what we could learn from it.

upon receiving it i saw that the average hours were pretty good, it had return visits and quite a few bible studies.

If I was still an MS I would have asked what his group overseer thought, perhaps asked him how many times he had worked with him over the last 3 months, what he thought of the quality of his ministry and what first hand experience of his ministry was. Basically, anything that shows looking at a bit of paper is meaningless, emphasising that if love was at the heart of things then the elders would be looking at the big picture and not silly stats that can be made up.

However, I gave up playing these silly games a couple of years ago and just glad not to have to do it anymore.

i have noticed at the last convention and at my last assembly that when i opened up my wifi setting, tons of hotspots came up for people tethering their tablets to their smart phones.

Have you looked into Hacker's Keyboard for Android?

Love that app.

I think the idea of local web server via piratebox (or similar) is great but I do wonder how many people would have the cojones to sit in the sessions reading apostate material.

There is more risk of being outed with a piratebox as well if you have hardware, although it can be run on a rooted phone which would arouse zero suspicion.

I would love to see several SSIDs up at a CA or RC even if they did nothing. The statement of there being numerous dissenters in the midst of the assembly is simple and powerful in my book.

Good points Simon and depressedsoul.

I would tend to agree that forcing information on someone is unlikely to change their mind - it's a bit like someone ramming a poster in your face as you leave an assembly.

I think that there a number of positives however, especially when the hotspot is set up by someone not known as an apostate.

1 - it clearly says "there is a dissenter here". If there was more than one hotspot at the same time then it adds some weight

2 - simply using jwfacts.com (or variant) is a clear pointer to perhaps the best site on the net for clear information about Jehovah's Witnesses. I don't think anyone is going to jump to jwfacts in the middle of session but those already feeling unsure about things may get some inspiration to click on that link later

3 - it's a beacon to others who maybe lurking on sites like these that there is a fellow objector close by. I would be bowled over if I knew there was one or two others at the CA who were mentally with me

4 - it does not cause a scene that just reinforces the stereotype of the embittered apostate

5 - you can participate from below the radar. Just enabling the link last weekend gave me nervous buzz that I had not experienced since first clicking on the link to JWN. I felt I was doing a little something, doing more than just sitting in my own little bubble of awareness

6 - it's fairly low risk. I think if it happens a lot then the org may come up with some strategy to try and work out who it is or deal with it in some other way but they cannot search anyone so if you are careful there is very little chance of getting caught

7 - it does make the attendants scurry around wondering who it is. A bit childish really but I was very entertained watching the reaction when I did it.

So, as a tool to wake someone up then on it's own it's probably not going to set the world alight but I like it nonetheless.

Imagine what message it would send if, for example, every person who has mentally woken up set up a hotspot called "I don't believe this anymore" and turned it on all at the same time. If you saw even 10 hotspots within your range then it would be fantastic.

One thing I might do differently next time is use a separate phone with no data allowance. This means you could leave the AP open with no worries that others are using your data allowance. It also allows you to use your own phone and hotspot without fear of anyone occidentally realising you are connected to or hosting the "apostate" AP.

Talking with a young elder

I get your reasoning and line of thinking but can you point me to where it says that James sent the men from Judea? According to the NWT, Acts 15:1 says:

Now some men came down from Ju·deʹa and began to teach the brothers: “Unless you get circumcised according to the custom of Moses,+ you cannot be saved.”

The Bearing Witness book commented on this:

Whether these “certain men” had been Pharisees before converting to Christianity is not stated. At the very least, they appear to have been influenced by that Jewish sect’s legalistic thinking. Also, they may have wrongly claimed to speak for the apostles and older men in Jerusalem. (Acts 15:23, 24)

The Acts 15:23,24 scripture in the NWT says:

“The apostles and the elders, your brothers, to those brothers in Antioch,+ Syria, and Ci·liʹcia who are from the nations: Greetings! 24 Since we have heard that some went out from among us and caused you trouble with what they have said,+ trying to subvert you,* although we did not give them any instructions

So, whilst I do think there is a spin on this, it's not clear that James sent an instruction from what I can see. It's an interesting line of reasoning I would like to have in my back pocket but I can't see anything that clearly says James sent them therefore there was a clear dispute between James and Paul. What else should I be looking at?

EDIT - just to point out that I am using the obvious references that one would have to use if talking to a dub. They have to see it in black and white in the NWT and publications...
