" The term often implies a turning away from the covenantal relationship with God, leading to a state of defilement or apostasy."
Strong's use of the word apostasy right at the end of the definition of the Hebrew word is fine, it is using the word for someone who has "turned aside" from practicing the Righteous Life expected of a worshipper of Yahweh/Jehovah.
But it is obvious why the Org. has chosen that word, as it is a Trigger Word for J.W's, to prompt them to Shun anyone who has left the Org. for whatever reason, not something Jesus did in the case of people in his day, who were rightly thought of as "apostates" because of being sinners. Jesus sat with them, ate meals with them, and lovingly tried to correct them.
Now you will be hauled in front of the Elders if you did what Jesus did, and had a meal with such people, who Jesus extended love to.
