MP, what you say is correct. But that was life in the olden days, and even more recently. You were either of the governing class, or you were a pleb, commoner, R&F. Sounds familiar? Even worse, if you were a servant or slave, your life would have been worth nothing. The kings surrounded themselves with soldiers, so they were virtually untouchable. They lived in fortified houses and castles and their word was law. Soldiers were paid from that which they could pillage from their enemies. There were added benefits. They could steal, rape, kill and take slaves. Remember, some of the prophets were highly unpopular when they criticised the rulers. Here I am thinking of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel.

MP, Jehovah did notice. For committing a murder, David was punished, even though he was the king. He was also not allowed to build the temple because of the blood he shed. At least the Bible writers were honest and did not hide the nasty bits. How often have we heard "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely". That goes for the GB and some elders as mentioned above. Like you said, blinded by their ambition. To come back to David, we should not measure his morality with our morality. Things were primitive in those days, and it was a case of kill or be killed. Would we have acted differently if we were in his situation? Jesus had to refer to David, because he had to identify himself, as well as a fulfillment of prophecy.

One must work at it all the time. I could never understand why I left the assemblies more morose and depressed than ever. It was like a dark cloud hanging over my head. Thought there was something wrong with me. Now I realize, breaking a person down and instilling a guilt complex, makes him or her more pliable and controllable. After many years of this, it is ingrained, and needs work all the time.

Doing the sums, some of us can never retire. We will have to die with our boots on, which is not a bad thing. To continue with work and projects, keeps one out of mischief.

The Jewish religious leaders did view the Christians as a cult. They were a break-away group from Judaism, with a man as leader. The Pharisee Gamaliel suggested a test. He mentioned a certain Theudas, as well as Judas the Galilean, both with a substantial following. Both were overthrown. If Jesus' disciples followed their example, they would be overthrown. If from God, they would not be overtrown (cf. Acts 5:34-39).

I believe morality to be based to a large degree on common sense. But that's looking at things from a human perspective. If God did exist, his morality would differ from ours, because he would view things from a different vantage point.
The situation of the Israelite tribes/nomads would have been unique. They had to survive in a hostile environment. Certainly, it would have been a case of survival of the fittest. They believed they had Yahweh fighting for them, and that they had the edge over their rivals. However, it would be unreasonable to compare or measure their morality to 21st century morality. Different time, different situation, different morality.

Yes, I agree with Alanv. One must be consistent. Paul says if the bugle gives an indistinct call, how will the soldiers know to ready themselves for battle? Good example of the child, Alanv. Similarly with the UN, described as "the disgusting thing causing desolation", and "the beast out of the abyss" in the literature. The R&F is constantly hammered with becoming a friend of the world, thus an enemy of God. But then it's all right to become a NGO in order to acquire a library card? Or become an NGO (in other countries) to do good and help the brothers? One elder told me that a lot of funds is made available for relief efforts. To benefit from these funds, one must be an NGO. That's what I call double standards.

It is not that a difficult a concept to grasp. If God is the Boss, anything he says, goes. If He did create the universe, then he's the man. Anyone that doesn't toe the line, he could squash like an ant. We worry about a flare from the sun (hitting Thursday). If God is the Creator, he's the one we should be worrying about.

MsGG20, perhaps at this stage you should ask, Was this the Truth? Is it still the Truth? One of the identifying marks of the true religion (according to Jesus) is unselfish principled love amongst God's people (cf. John 13:35). Do you see it? What about the fruits of the spirit according to Gal. 5:22, 23? Are they there or are they missing? If missing, Why? What's the problem?
Could this be the reason? Read Matt. 24:15 and Mark 13:14. According to current Watchtower theology, what does it mean? Here's two Watchtower articles dealing with the subject:
*** World Government (1977) go chap. 9 p. 152 par. 9 The “Sign” of Imminence of the World Government
***We have also observed the “placing of the disgusting thing that is causing desolation” in the ‘setting up’ of a man-made substitute for God’s Messianic kingdom, namely, the League of Nations, in 1919 , and its successor, the United Nations, in 1945. (Matthew 24:4-15; Daniel 12:11)
*** w99 5/1 p. 17 par. 16 “Let the Reader Use Discernment” *** Since the start of the great tribulation is yet future, is the “standing in a holy place” still ahead of us? Evidently so. While “the disgusting thing” made its appearance early in this century and has, thus, existed for decades, it will take a position in a unique way “in a holy place” in the near future.
Have you seen "the disgusting thing" standing in a holy place, where it ought not? How serious are the Society about their interpretation of the Bible? Are they living up to it? They expect the R&F to live up to to it. Judge for yourself.
