LOL @ Black Sheep :)
I also found this in Faith on the March, page 45 . . .
"C. T. Russell had no idea of building a strongly knit organization. At that time we saw no
need for it. We expected 1914 would mark the end of this system of things on earth.
Our big concern at that time was to preach as effectively and extensively as possible
before that date arrived. In the meantime, we thought, we must prepare ourselves
individually to be ready to go to heaven." -

Jehovah's Witnesses stance on serving in the military...
by garyneal inmy wife and i live in a military area so it is natural that we encounter a great number of people who have benefitted from it and are living fairly good lives.
my wife and i talked about this some last week when it was found out that the unbelieving husband of the jw who babysits our daughter is retired air force.
this would explain why they are living so well.

"My whole pet peeve with them is that they are quick to tell others not to join the military and yet they themselves aren't giving up their military benefits, especially that pension."
I know exactly what you mean. My aunt was married to Navy cook when she came into the org back in the mid 60's. She was a ranting fanatical old witch who was always in your business, proclaiming this pop song demonized, and that shirt satanic. She once nearly got violent with my grandmother, a devout JW herself, over having some plastic roses tacked to her livingroom wall that vaguely resembled a crucifix if you really tried hard to see it. She always criticized my mother for being married to a worldly man, yet here she was, married to a military man, worldly also, but it was better, it was OK since he would hit up a meeting with her from time to time just to get her to shut her damn mouth, and finally succumbed to the pressure to study and get baptized in the 70's. But I do not recall that man ever having a share in the field service activity or answering at meetings, or studying a single paragraph from the Watchtower with his kids. The crazy old bat gladly made the weekly trip to the commissary to buy groceries with him. Today, she is still living on the dead man's money . . . military benefits and health care.

"Quite an evil-minded work of art that distorts the reality, to say the least. Russell was expecting "the end" of the Gentile Times in 1914. From 1904 to 1914, he was expecting the beginning of the "time of trouble" in 1914; he plainly stated that he was not expecting "the end of the world" in 1914. I believe that the end of the Gentile Times did come in 1914, and that we have been in the "time of trouble" ever since."
So, you are attacking me ad-hominem, calling me "evil-minded", then countering with more symantics? Your reasoning is pure and typical JW all the way, friend, and it's not a work of art friend, it's satire, and it's also documentation and evidence of what Rusell really intended when he published his non-prophesy prophesies.
If you could, please, explain exactly the reason Russell and friends took a boat over to Israel in 1914 and sat atop the Mount of Olives for this picture? Was it a mere sight-seeing tour of the Bible lands? They weren't expecting to be raptured off or some such nonsense, where they? I'm surprised Rutherford wasn't wearing a damn jet-pack so he could get a head start.
Actions beat subterfuge, rhetoric, symantics, and blah blah blah everytime. LOL, they packed and traveled to Jeruselem to stand on the transporter bay of the USS EyesOnThePrize . . . Expecting. Expecting. Russell published his "expectations" and everyone got worked up about going to heaven in October of 1914. Expecting the end of the Gentile Times in 1914, which meant, no matter what you say, or however Russell colored it before and after, that the end of this system of things was going to come; the implications and inferrences of Russell's false prophesies are clear.
I'm not debating this crap with you anymore. You are clearly cherry-picking the denials of Russell and ignoring the whole story. Ridiculous.
Peace

“’Our own views are not prophecy, but interpretations of the holy prophets of old. -- Watch Tower, October 1890, page 8.’”
Prophesy:
1. To reveal by divine inspiration.
2. To predict with certainty as if by divine inspiration. See Synonyms at foretell.
3. To prefigure; foreshow.
v.intr.
1. To reveal the will or message of God.
2. To predict the future as if by divine inspiration.
3. To speak as a prophet. As Editor of The Watchtower, CT Russell replies to a reader's question about when the Church is expected "to be glorified" in the WT April 15, 1916. pp. 126–127 . "We believe that the dates have proven to be quite right. We believe that Gentile Times have ended, and that God is now allowing the Gentile Governments to destroy themselves, in order to prepare the way for Messiah's Kingdom. The Lord did not say that the Church would all be glorified by 1914. We merely inferred it and, evidently, erred"
Backpeddling, face saving.
After the great disappointment of 1914, Russell added the following to “The Author’s Forward” in Studies In The Scriptures Vol. 2:
“We could not, of course, know in 1889, whether the date 1914, so clearly marked in the Bible as the end of the Gentile lease of power or permission to rule the world, would mean that they would be fully out of power at that time, or whether, their lease expiring, their eviction would begin. The latter we perceive to be the Lord’s program; and promptly in August, 1914, the Gentile kingdoms referred to in the prophecy began the present great struggle, which, according to the Bible, will culminate in the complete overthrow of all human government, opening the way for the full establishment of the Kingdom of God’s dear Son.”
It’s always the same thing, and a bunch of gymnastical symanticals is what you are defending and rationalizing. Most rational people would call it “intellectual dishonesty”. The snake oil salesmen denying inspiration, denying publicly he is any sort of prophet, yet makes assertions and predictions, leaving the window open for himself to crawl out of when called to account for getting his followers excited and onboard for the grand climax, the grand delusion. If Bruce Lee's style of martial arts, Jeet Kune Do, was, as he put it, "the art of fighting without fighting", then Russell's style of Bible teaching was "the art of prophesying without prophesying". The blind weak follower buys the backpeddling and rationalizations for it, but the rational minded see it for what it is.The Time is at Hand, 1915 ed., p. 99: "In view of this strong Bible evidence concerning the Times of the Gentiles, we consider it an established truth, that the final end of the kingdoms of this world, and the full establishment of the Kingdom of God, will be accomplished near the end of A.D. 1915. Then the prayer of the church, ever since her Lord took his departure - 'Thy kingdom come' - will be answered; and under that wise and just administration, the whole earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord" (Later editions have 1914 instead of 1915)
It’s no different than the 1975 fiasco in which the WTBTS told JW’s that they never said the end was definitely coming. You took it all wrong. Your fault, not ours.
More later . . .

Of course Fred Phelps and his clan of inbred Bible bangers are real Christians. Christianity has a long history of bigotry, hatred, violence, threats, fear-mongering, slander, lying, corruption and child abuse. They are probably one of the last sects of true Christians left on earth. Not saying they're right, just saying they are the real deal. They just have the balls and lunacy to show the true toxic face of Christianity, where other sects water it down, candy-coat it and spring for fancy packaging.

Yes, Russell was a stand-up guy. He was exactly what you and the WTBTS's pseudo history books on Russell say he was.
