what was the worst advice given to you while you were a JW ?

mine's was, if your job interfere with the meetings you have to decide who you will choose,.

serving jehovah or serving man, if anyone knew my needs it most definitely was jehovah.

and he knew i needed my job to eat.

Now that you are at school quit it and never think about going back.

I listened and quit my A-levels

Pioneer. I listened and wasted my early years on becoming demotivated.

When going to a job interview explain you're a JW and give a good witness about how it's the most important thing in your life so you won't do overtime or get involved socially. It was in the middle of a bad recession and I had no qualifications so I guess that advice really made me stand out from other candidates. Stand out like a loser. I didn't get the job.

Personal thoughts as a new parent

i'm in the living room, watching my wife interact with our baby girl.

the pure joy and innocence emanating from my beautiful baby is beyond anything i could have every imagined.

i see the smile on my wife's face.

Becoming a parent re-defines your world and may make you question how you were brought up too.

assembly conversation overheard.

I was at a 5* hotel next to a DC - the place was overrun with JW's - some with name badges some without.

Is this just a way of easing the blow of 3 days of hell by having a slice of luxury? The pool was empty during the day

One bunch of witlesses were in a polite queue waiting for the lift when they decided to opt for the stairs. There was a sign and despite there being 3 of them they simply couldn't find the stairs. There were 8 doors to choose from - 7 of them were sequentially numbered hotel room doors and the 8th was clear glass with stairs beyond. I was right there and out of sheer amusement I kept quiet. Defeated they rejoined the queue for the lift mumbling about what they'd do in an emergency

study the bible with the aid of the watchtower (read out propaganda, repeat propaganda)

shepherding call (annual performance review likely to involve a work improvement plan and possibly a disciplinary hearing)

worldly viewpoint (common sense)

can you picture yourself in the new system? (stroking a lion with a basket of fruit surrounded by smiling people wearing square clothes? where can I get a wifi connection?)

the last days of the last days (started hearing that expression about 7500 days ago - quite a few days don't ya think?)

seek out sheeplike ones (look for people who are as dumb as an animal that will follow anyone and not answer back)

serve where the need is greater (this apathetic town can fry - we want some new territory)

gave a good witness (failed to convince them or you'd have managed to convert them)

worldly wisdom (wisdom as opposed to lunatic logic)

disciplining in righteousness (bully them with the bible)

encouraging one another (depress each other with the same old conversations; "hang in there old boy we're in the last days of the last days")

spent all day in service on saturday

I spent all of Saturday giving a "non-witness" - looking after kids of Dubs - one parent was really ill - the other a pathetic excuse for the head of the house (doesn't work or look after the kids). The kids had a good time - no other JW that I know of has really done anything of much use - so it's left to the ex-JW's to do something good. There are JW's who could have helped - but they were busy counting their time.

i fail to see why people such as alice in wonderland, bane and others, are regularly singled out as tolls.

demands are repeatedly made that they are shunned and thrown off the forum; while people like perry, who rant on with pages of controversial drivel, are considered acceptable?.

i personaly don't view any of them as trolls, just people who feel a need to stand up for what they believe.

In my humble opinion I think it's ok to stand up for JW's on this site assuming logical debate. But if you wouldn't say it directly to someone's face then don't write it here.

so I'm not sure why BANE thinks this is a reasonable way to address people online. I know some of you make a sport out of exposing BANE's lack of JW credentials (and humorous it is too) so I won't tar the Borg with his brush but I have known JW's who said things or acted in a way that was acceptable in Dub-world but wouldn't be tolerated in the real world.

If I spoke to people in the street the way AIW or BANE write online I'd get a punch in the face - so I'd learn to shut the f**k up or tone it down. There is a wide berth between debate with banter and judgemental baiting.

The Amish

i watched an interesting programme last night on the amish religion.

i remember watching the film "witness" many years ago with harrison ford so i already had an insight into what sort of people they were.. they seem a peaceful, family/community orientated group who stick to the teachings in the bible like glue.

when jesus spoke about 'being separate from the world' surely no-one could have followed this more than the amish.

I saw some of the programme. To some it might seem an idyllic way of life for a summer holiday but I just saw control, repression and a religion very hard to exit. Saying that I've a great deal of respect for them - if the whole world was Amish - it'd be a far greener world.

As a Man have your Attitudes Towards Women Changed since Exiting JW's ?

being raised in the jehovah's witness cult - i saw so many times what would be referred to as " supportive wives " wait after meetings for an hour, two hours, even more until midnight for husbands who met in backrooms meeting to decide on judicial matters if some individual witness was righteous - or not.

wives of elders were expected to do this to show submission and alleged " respect " for the headship arrangement or eldership of their husbands !

As a born-in it was hard not to be influenced by the way that women were treated as a lower class than men. I never thought too highly of myself so was always very respectful of women and their skills. I was amazed when I'd take the book study group as a teenager and there'd be really smart and experienced sisters there.

I was brought up believing that I'd have the pick of the sisters cos there were far fewer brothers, that I'd live forever and that if I were alone with a worldly woman - sex would happen unless I fought her off.

I don't believe that now.

Hello - I´m new here

just wanted to introduce myself.... .

i am a secret fader but since reading this forum i feel i am alot more confident about telling my family/friends that i don t go to the meetings and inactive.. my hubby is also a fader with me...we kind of drifted after my first baby was born.

she is now 11.. it all started with my mom who started studying with my cousin when i was about 15. while she was studying i also started studying (i was about 16).

It's a shame that you had to see your mother treated like that for a few cigarettes. I'm sure she took a lot of comfort that you still talked to her as crazy as that sounds.

I too faded over a long time and eventually stopped going telling my family after my last meeting. It took a while for the dust to settle but it was as if a huge burden had been lifted because I could be honest and not make excuses the whole time.

I never wanted to bring kids up in that wierd controlling world simply because I was too spineless to leave. Best decision I made.

Well done for escaping, with your husband and daughter too!

Aussies Are Very Friendly

Had one turn up on my doorstep to stay. Friend of a friend. He was in the flat for an hour before he was on the phone to some friends from northern Europe. They were on the doorstep the next morning also wanting to stay. Very friendly.

Love them and travelled lots with aussies. Some aussie girls are amazing. Some are scary. Very scary.
