Ya know, I really despise this behavior on the part of the JW's. If there's ANY opportunity for a sales pitch, they jump right on it. I wasi n class with a JW as well, one who knows me and my family, and not only did I have to pretend to be someone I am not whenever she was around, I had to deal with her endless chatter whenever the conversation with one of our fellow students COULD be opened up to "preach". The first day we were there, she made it known that she didn't appreciate the "foul language" and to please refrain from "dirty joking" around her. She set herself up as a woman with a stick up her ass from the getgo. Even now, we work for the same company, but we never see each other, and one of our co-workers told me the other day he hates having to hear from her because she's so FAKE (his word, not mine). He had her pegged the day he met her...pretty much everyone else in the class did as well. No one REALLY liked her, they just tolerated her. But they came to ME for the "reality" version of what JW's are about...I didn't hold back from telling them the absolute truth.

The classic features of a JW wedding are:
by highdose infirstly a wedding/sales talk that mostly features heavily on how the woman should behave (hint, doormat) and lightly brushes over the fact of the husbands bevhaviour ( oh yeah he should treat her well).
the reception normaly at some crummy comunity hall with yellowed ceilings and chucks of damp plaster falling off the walls.
the seats normaly arranged facing eachother all around the edge, so that theres a huge unused space in the middle and everyone is climbing over everyone elses legs to get to their chair.. a big spread donated by everyone, normaly an ode to food poisoning.

I've been to a few that had "nice" receptions... ie. a hall rented from an upscale restaurant or other venue (like a place that actually DOES wedding receptions!) with cloth napkins, appetizers, salad, soup, main, and dessert courses, and an actual dance floor. Good food, I must admit! All plated and served by waiters and waitresses. Amazingly, mostly all of those marriages went kaput. But not all JW wedding receptions are horrid.
Other things I remember:
~No toasting (based on Pagan beliefs...but wait, so are wedding rings!)
~No best man speech (cause that ends with toasting and we don't want TOO much attention on the happy couple on THEIR day)
~Certain ones winking and saying "You know what THEY'RE gonna do tonight!" wink wink nudge nudge
~No dollar dance
~Cheesy music that was previously okayed by an elder or MS, guaranteed to be not much fun.
~Elders keeping an eye out for those that may be "dancing provocatively"

My mother's "study" got her one of the leather bound bibles (not sure if it was from this site or another one...there are PLENTY of others doing the same thing). I think it's got the Reasoning book bound into it as well, if I'm not mistaken...
Kinda makes me laugh though... I've seen many get their bibles bound with either the Reasoning book or the song book...or even the Knowledge book, back in the day. All that money spent...and the song book and Knowledge book are now "old light", so they're SOL and have to pay to have their bibles re-bound...but, these companies will only bind BRAND NEW books, so any notes they had in their bible or their books are lost in the new version. All that money going into something like that when all it's going to do is CHANGE in a few years AGAIN. And it's money that most JW's can't really afford to be spending.

Jehovah, the Ineffective Creator!
by zgborn into hear jehovah's witnesses tell the story, their god is a lousy creator.
consider, from the very beginning of time, he has had his intentions thwarted at every turn.
he intended to have a world filled with loving human worshippers, but from the garden of eden forward, he has not gotten what he wanted.

We need more critical thinking.
Critical thinking is a handicap in Dub Land. Amazingly, I always scored very high on critical thinking tests and the like when I was in school. My brother, too... Neither of us stayed with the bOrg.
As for the lousy creator thing, yeah I'd have to agree. Borrowing from my post in Falcon's water canopy thread, he apparently created this water canopy for his perfect earth, then opened it up and emptied it, and threw his perfect earth completely out of balance. Not a lot of forethought there, huh YHWH?

New Disfellowshipping Policy?
by Madmen ini heard the policy on disfellowshipping has changed, so that you cannot be disfellowshipped if you're not currently "fellowshipping".
does this apply if you're baptised, but haven't associated for over a decade and then choose to speak out in the media (specifically tv) in a way that the watchtower society would consider to be apostasy e.g.
questioning the society's function and/or the very existence of a creator?.

Yknot, thanks for posting that... looks like I won't be telling anyone the exact town I'm moving to. Wouldn't want the local JWs having any record of me whatsoever. I'll have to get a PO box.

"Today, sir...I don't want to. But I did bloody tell you. I suppose they'll implicate me in all this, as your accomplice." "Accomplice? I'm going to tell them the whole thing was your idea."
Gotta love Batman!
As someone who's BTDT, I am sorry that you're having to go through this. I went through it a little over 2 years ago after a 7 year marriage to someone who was much like what you described your wife as. I could write a book (actually, I've been told I should lol).
The first few months are ROUGH. You go through the "what could I have done differently" moments, the days where you doubt yourself and the decision you made...times when you feel maybe you SHOULD get back together and make it work. You will go through periods of lonliness, self-doubt, sadness at the fact that this chapter of your life is ending. I went through those feelings for about 6 months, even called and begged his abusive and controlling ass to take me back and let me come home...and then we finalized our divorce and I realized that this was the best thing he could have ever done for me. He claims I was the abuser...yet he took NO time to heal from anything "I had done to him" and got married again less than a month and a half later. But, me? I've taken the time to heal. I'm not the same person anymore. Two years of healing and figuring out who I am, what I believe, figuring out HOW to be ALONE and be HAPPY. I don't identify myself by the person I am with anymore. I'm not lost in a vast sea of self-doubt. It's taken a long time to get to this place, and the journey wasn't an easy one, but it was so worth it.
You're not walking this vast wilderness alone. Many are with you. Many have gone before you, and we're all waiting on the other side cheering you on until you reach the finish.

I loved Misquoting Jesus and Jesus, Interrupted.... Gonna have to see if I can find this most current gem at the library. Bart Ehrman was partially responsible for me opening my eyes and really critiquing the bible. Now when I do read it (which I do on occasion...my hunny likes to debate and we both thoroughly enjoy the banter!), I read it merely as a book of a people's history. It's great when you don't take it all so literal.
I actually was talking about this with my mother today (among other things) and she was doing the JW "not everything in the bible is literal...some of it is SYMBOLIC" (ooooh...aaaaaah! ). So I asked "How do you know what's symbolic and what's literal??" She responded "Well when you have the holy spirit, you know...". So I asked her how she'd know she had holy spirit...She started talking about how the JW's are the only ones who understand Revelation, and then she turned to a box in the Revelation book that says:
To
understandthebookofRevelationweneed? To receive the help of Jehovah’s spirit
? To discern when the Lord’s day began (1914, wasn't it?? )
? To recognize the faithful and discreet slave today
So, according to her, she knows they have holy spirit because they "understand Revelation" and "see the signs of the times we're living in".
But the way I see it, there's no way in hell the JW's can understand Revelation because they don't meet the 2nd and 3rd criteria, which means they don't meet the 1st! Huh! Interesting!

I've got one that can see!
by Mr. Falcon inyesterday, there was a thread concerning the recent important discovery they found in the middle east.
if proven to be authentic from the correct time-period it would signify that early christians did indeed use the cross as part of their religion.
we all commented about how if this does indeed turn out to be true, the wtbs and it's jws will either shrug it off or simply come up with some bizarre conspiracy story.. so i decided to test the waters a little.

Well, I think we can all agree that this sums up how we feel about the Society and their lies and control...

Funny you should mention this... I frequently have discussions with my mom...not meaning to. They just freakin' happen. We're talking about the weather or something and all of a sudden it's "Well Jehovah says blah blah blah". And I just can't keep my big freakin' mouth shut... It grates on my ears when she starts with the Dub-speak! It's like...being waterboarded...
ANYWAY... So we were talking about things because I said I'd never get married again, how I think it's a useless institution and how I think it's just a legal way for the government to get involved and take your money and basically that even the so-called "first marriage" wasn't a legal institution, they were simply brought together and were considered man and wife. We got into polygamy, etc. She said it was allowed in order "to populate the earth". I was speechless at first, then followed with an incredulous "WHAAAAAAAT??? Where in the bible does it say that?? This was WAAAAY after Adam and Eve and waaaaay after there were already other governmental systems in place and people were abundant on the earth!" Keep in mind, this is the same woman who told me Jehovah created the dinosaurs in order to "pack down the earth" .
Anyway, we ended up getting to the whole crucifiction/torture stake bit. I asked if she knew how the Romans killed people. She said "No, but I know it was brutal". I told her about the recent lead books being found and if they are found to be real, these early Christians who were ALIVE THEN said that the Romans used crosses". Automatically the defenses went up...I swear, I heard a "whoooosh!". She said "So you mean to tell me you think Jesus died on a CROSS??? The bible says it was an UPRIGHT POLE! They'll NEVER get me to believe it was a cross! That's what those CATHOLICS believe! They worship it! It wasn't no cross!". I said "YOUR bible says that it was a stake...no other bibles say that, mom...The word stauros doesn't mean there wasn't a crossbeam". I tried explaining it with logic. She said he had to have died with his arms above his head in order for his lungs to collapse. But I then said "Mom, think of what you said 2 minutes ago... The Romans were BRUTAL...they didn't WANT a quick death! Crucifictions were Rome's advertisement to the people...a freakin' BILLBOARD that screamed THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SCREW WITH ROME! People were hung there for DAYS, dying slowly. Passersby would see this and know who was boss. They were a LIVING BREATHING DYING billboard. They were nailed through the ankle bone...the most painful spot. It didn't render the foot useless, it just made it excruciating to put pressure on it, which they would have done in order to rest their arms and hands from nails up there. They probably even built a little seat on the upright pole so the victim could sit a bit to take the pressure off and prolong death in order to MAKE THE TORTURE LAST LONGER. It makes MORE sense that, being that Rome was a Pagan nation, they would use their Pagan symbol!"
It ended with her digging her heels in and saying she'd never believe it was a cross. Period. Then she got into asking me why I won't go to the memorial cause Jesus said "Keep doing this in remembrance of me"... I told her I remember every day, I don't need a special day in order to recall and that I don't agree with how the JW's do it. She ended up dragging out the Revelation book and a page from a Watchtower she photocopied and put on the fridge that talks about "spiritual fatigue" and I lost it. I broke down crying and said "No more!! Please!! I can't listen to that anymore!!".
Not my finest moment...

This topic is of interest to me since I'm moving about 1800 miles away from where I am currently. I'm planning on just being myself, not mentioning JWs, going to community things, etc. Finding groups for my hobbies and interests will help as well.
