usa today everyone has a gun, why?.....to protect themselves...from who?

other folks with guns!.....yes it's in your laws...but they were written when the british ruled you.

one school gun killing every week does not happen anywhere else in the world....maybe you need more guns to protect your kids.....one in the lunchbox.....does anyone else see this.

public health care system that is possibly the best in the world? Low crime, high standard of living?? Excellent schools? ~beks

Sorry beks... many folks in the USA (agreed, not enough, but more than the press lets on about) have pretty good health insurance, the finest doctors and hospital in the world nearby, live in pretty safe areas and have a standard of living that outpaces much of the world at large.

I do... and I suspect you and many of your neighbors do to.

The Swiss have control of most of the money and financial services in Europe ( most of the world that counts on top of that). No one wants to invade them.. and they police whatever riff-raff they have around or deport them.

I have to figure the Swiss dialects dont have an equivilant phrase for words like, "baby momma", "hoodie", "homeboy", "crip", "blood" or "wack" either.

lets see...the Swiss model adapted to the USA

I get to keep a miltary grade rifle (maybe a handgun too depending on rank) ammo and all my army stuff at home... all the time

I get to go to drills and training on a regular basis

It's compulsory... and I am obligated for a along time base on age... I assume they have a way for objectors and pacifists to do alternative service.

I dont know ... seems risky to me. What happens if those Swiss guys go postal with all that stuff at the house? At least in the USA we keep the National Guard Armory locked up.

Plus those Swiss get trained in tactics... they are a standing army... not in Barracks under the eye of officers and security. What if a town full of those Swiss guys get a bug up their asses to start a coup?

But I guess those few Swiss hoods know if they break into a fellow countrymans house the owner will have a few of SGT FRICKS Rules going for him... the part about a semi-auto long gun comes to mind right away.

Maybe it's that good Chocolate and Cheese ... makes a polite society eh?

Sad part is the Feds would have a C141 full of BATF agents to quell that rebellion if it happened today. I watched MSNBC Gun Documentary Sunday night with Al Roker ( his talent as a weather guy is his strength by the way) that ends up being a "happy ending" story about how the BATF waits out a guy hold up in a house. I fear that if something like that happened today we would see a wide spread revolt.

I guess they have just done Ruby Ridge to death.

It was kind of cool though...Big Al hits the street with BATF agents in Chicago to make a co-ordinated early morning sweep of "heavily armed" drug dealers. The Feds load up ...it looks like D-Day Europe part 2... net results...the Feds seize a few pounds of dope, $40 grand and 2 ( yea, count em 2!) guns... not much of a gun story if you ask me.

Then we go to NOLA where they moan about some 20 folks ...all with drug and weapons priors who are still running the street. Convict the guys already... after all you have a camera pointed at the whole 'hood!

i didn't pass the california bar (golly, a lot of my classmates didn't, either!)...

i could only afford a school with an average to mediocre pass rate, so it's no huge surprise.

i will take it again, of course, but i'm not sure if i will take it in february (i really don't have the $$ - to take off from work - or the time to study - while i work).

i just finished reading a 1943 essay by bertrand russell (not related to crackpot ctr as far as i know, lol) where he discusses his cynical viewpoint of religious beliefs.

towards the end of his essay, he indicates that, instead of being disgusted by people who believe crazy implausibilities, he is actually somewhat amused, even entertained, by some of them, when their beliefs are generally harmless to the rest of the population.

after listing a few of these what he terms superstitions that "add to the gaity of life", he makes an interesting statement that jws should pay attention to:.

DRILL SERGEANT JOE B. FRICK'S RULES FOR A GUN, KNIFE, BASEBALL BAT OR FIST FIGHT

1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight , bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.
7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell "Fire!" Why "Fire"? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... and who is going to summon help if you yell "Intruder," "Glock" or "Winchester?"

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. "No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy."

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheet rock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That's how you live if hit in your "good" side.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don't (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.
21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.
22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4".

25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.

26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.

27. Regardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperature.
28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, "He said he was going to kill me. I believed him. I'm sorry, Officer, but I'm very upset now. I can't say anything more. Please speak with my attorney."

1: Never be unarmed.

i'm just wondering if everyone has been holding back until the shopping season for christmas.

it was like everyone one was pent up waiting to shop.

(maybe paying off credit cards for months and worrying about the future).

showed acres of brand new cars - foreign cars - that were shipped in and are now sitting on some leased land down there because the dealers are refusing to take them. Noplace for them to go - so there they sit...and will sit for a long time~SL

If you see a nice one ton Dually with a crew cab sitting in one of those lots let me know.....Figure they will miss it for a couple of years?

Solving the Somalia Piracy Problem - Debate Here...

hey friends.... ok. i'm not saying that i have the solution to the somalia piracy problem.

saturday's wall street journal had a whole article on this.. he's my solution.

debate me, add to it, or come up with your own solution.. but the problem seems to that "people" are obviously paying the ransom demands.. lets face it... you have $100 million in oil - pirates sieze the ship - and they ask for 10 million or they blow up the ship.

Nothing like a few minutes of fighting for your life to improve the motivation factor. I would rather be poorly motivated with a chance to improve my motivation than dead.

Caedes.. I wont speak for anyone else.. but having been in the bight a few times (near death, accidents, failed equipment , horse wrecks guns pointed at me) I can assure you of this;

If you have time for your life to flash before your eyes ...you dont understand the gravity of the situation.

I think this story below hits the heart of the problem, which is an easy access to firearms. Just out of curiosity, does any American state have any form of licensing as far as firearms are concern? Where I live you have to go through major police check ups before you are allowed to obtain a license. Interestingly, we have a very low crime rate as well. Those two wouldn't have anything to do with each other, would they? ~zagor

The baby and the Illinois FOID card....old news. Just shows that once the state gets it's fingers in an issue they are bound to screw it up.

Some states (Ilinois is one of them) have a host of (extra) gun laws...list of banned guns, ID laws, waiting periods, transportation restrictions... even a few cities have total bans on handguns.. cant buy sell own transport or think about it... and dont even ask about a permit to carry!

Chicago-Cook county is one of these places... and they have a pretty grim statistcal history regarding people on people crimes using deadly force.

Gun Control laws dont reduce crime. They just make hoops for the law abiding to jump through.

Caedes... most bullies dont handle being shot (back) at very well. Maybe Belguim or Poland or Saudi Arabia should put a few light cruisers off the Horn Of Africa. The USA is plumb out of those ships... and we dont want to be accused of being a superpower bully nation by say...the French.

According to most of what I hear on NPR regarding this sea faring thugs is that they are out of work fishermen... not some "trained force". So what it it... poor folks making an international statement or just some sea-going carjackers?
