Paradise delayed and the marshmallow test

i recently read a book called the marshmallow test by walter mischel.

it describes research which stemmed from an experiment in the 1960s where children were offered the choice of 1 treat, sometimes a marshmallow, or 2 treats if they can wait a while.

one of the unexpected findings was that children who perform well in the test (delay gratification) generally have a better chance of having a happy successful life, even earning more than their peers who wanted the treat right away.

JW type cult in Designated Survivor

did anyone else catch episode 10 of season 2 of designated survivor on netflix?

there was a group portrayed that were clearly meant to be jws; the mother was objecting to a blood transfusion for her baby.. the funny part was the debate amongst the white house staff as to whether they could be classified as a cult.

i found it interesting that they didn't go as far as to name the group as jws..

this last paragraph seems particularly relevant:.

importantly, van prooijen said his findings help make sense of why education can contribute to “a less paranoid society” even when conspiracy theories are not explicitly challenged.

this ted talk struck a chord with me.

the speaker uses the analogy of the soldier and the scout mindset to illustrate our cognitive biases when analysing information through the prism of our current beliefs.
