I do not think you are being malicious at all. I am in fact glad to see you are interested in people. And although I love psychology and English, I will tell you that I did not major in either field as an undergrad. larc andf tina will vouch for me!

Mostly philosophy, theology, and Greek, Latin as well as Hebrew grammars and lexicons. I also love the study of Greek and Roman rhetoric. But I also enjoy a nice classic work of literature every now and then. I recently completed the Divine Comedy, one of my favorite works, and I love _Crime and Punishment_. I have also read a number of works on IQ testing and learning styles. Robert Sternberg and Howard Gardner are two of my favorite authors.
:And what kind of music do you like to listen to? I'm into sci-fi and fantasy (sometimes, I also read stuff on psychology, sociology and any other "ologies" that catch my fancy), and my favorite music right now seems to be alternative and hard rock.:
I think its cool that you like the -ologies above and sci-fi. I like hard rock, but my favorite music right now is country. I especially like the classic rock bands such as Kansas, Boston, and some of Led Zeppelin's songs. But Shania and Faith are the bomb! <LOL>

I have a question to ask you. This question has perplexed me for years.
Rod Plotnik writes about Freud's theory of the unconscious and notes that Freud thought that encounters with "threatening wishes or desires, especially if they are sexual or aggressive" make us "automatically defend our self-esteem by placing these psychologically threatening thoughts in a mental place that is called the unconscious, from which these thoughts cannot be voluntarily recalled."
But Plotnik goes on to observe that cognitive psychologists have now developed a different concept of the unconscious called "the cognitive unconscious." He describes the cognitive unconscious as "the mental and emotional processes that we are unaware of but that bias and influence our conscious feelings, thoughts, and behaviors."
I guess I wonder how we could ever know that we actually possess any type of unconsciousness. If we are unaware of mental and emotional processes, how can we really prove that they bias and influence our conscious thoughts and behaviors? Is there any way to scientifically verify the actual existence of an unconscious? Lastly, I've wondered if it is not more appropriate to speak in terms of the conscious and its unconscious aspects. In other words, maybe the unconscious IS the conscious during its unconscious moments. What do you think?

That quote, to someone who is familiar with that list of -isms, is quite clear and precise. It would take many paragraphs to get across the same thoughts without using those words.:

That is my point. I am used to employing those words to express my point. Admittedly, I have somewhat parodied the way that philosophers often express themselves here. But I also know why they choose certain terms.
This same problem came up in the philosophy of art class I took as an undergrad. I thought the material was fairly straightforward and simple. But I was the only philosophy major in the class. Others thought the professor unnecessarily used "big" words to get the point across. But I thought he tried hard to break matters down to their basic elements.
This same professor frequently chided me for using technical vocabulary in class. But he grew used to it, and I still have private conversations about epistemological issues with him via email. We even get together sometimes and have steak and beer for lunch as we laugh about certain in-class experiences we enjoyed. The professor I'm speaking of really tried to keep it simple in his class. But at times, one has to express concepts in technical language.

Since you're in grad school, what are you majoring in? (If you've said it before, I probably missed it, sorry.) And besides posting here, what do you do for fun?:
Rochelle, I really do not want to answer some of your questions for the sake of my concealed identity. There are some people on the inet who mercilessly try to track down those engaging in "reconnaissance missions" by matching up any little thing you say on a forum with your real world identity. But I will tell you this: I plan to enter the educational system in the future. Duns wants to teach. I cannot tell you my major, but my hobbies are reading, studying, listening to music, playing basketball, and going to theme parks.
