  Really Downsizing? Then Howcome....

  at tonight's service meeting (u.s.), another one of those "thank you for your continued contributions (hint hint, beg beg)" letters was read.. in the text, they talked about needing funds to renovate/remodel the squibb and 107 (i think that's the right number) in an effort to bring them up to building guidelines that match the other branch facilities.

  this doesn't sound like shutting down in ny and retiring to patterson, as i saw in an earlier thread.. anybody in the know want to add some insight to this?.

  I heard the same letter about remodeling a couple of buildings in New York. One of them was the 107 building, it seems that the cafeteria had to be shut down a couple of years ago due to health problems. On the bright side the upgrades might be to make the building more marketable, but I think they just want to spend money on their empire.

  The numbers do show increases. I wonder how much the world population has increased over the last year (probably more than 3%). We live in an area just outside of Las Vegas with a 13 % growth rate. So, every now and then I would hear that Jehovah blessed us because of our growth, which would not even compare to the growth of the community. But, if you attended a hall that was in an area that had no growth, the trend at the hall would be stagnant or show a negative trend (obviously no blessing from Jehovah there).

  WTS and donations

  many christian type religions, organized or not, believe in giving 10% like was done in the old days in the bible.

  you even have the mormons, who must give 10%.. as money hungry as the wts is, why have they not gone for that as well?

  they can always justify anything for any reason.

  I dont think that they will go to a mandatory contribution, because of all of they talk that they have put out about how they are different on this point than Babylon the Great. But, I have noticed a lot more time at meetings has been devoted to talking about how they should give more, about how much free stuff that the Society has given to people, yadda yadda yadda. The Convention that I attended this summer must have had three references to the poor old lady that gave everything that she had, and countless gentle reminders to give at the contribution boxes that are lined up at every door and staircase.

  should a jw in view of the pagan connection drink spring water?.

  Is the Society selling any Brooklyn properties??

  specifically the furman st bldg was mentioned.

  great post blondie.

  at the beginning of your post you asked for an illustration that we heard that did not fit in with the talk. I was trying to think of one and came up blank. they have gotten so lame that they are all bad. I went to a convention a couple of months ago and only heard one that actually tied in with the rest of the talk. all of the rest I seened to zone out.

  i have a friend who is studying with the jw's right now.

  he's a very open minded guy and has been interested in hearing what i have to say on the matter.

  he has seen the dateline show (i taped it for him) - and i've shown him some info about the history.

  I conducted a number of searches to see if there is any literature out there to support a 607 BCE date for the destruction of Jerusalem and couldn't find it. I even put a bone out there for one of the Brothers, that if he could show me where they had come up with that date, and it was supported, I would start a bible study. After a month of diligent searching, by him and his wife, I recieved a number of answers, none of which said why they chose thier date over the one that the rest of the world uses.

  i have noticed that in the last few months the issue of giving more donations, because the wachtower needs it has become more popular.

  the convention that we went to this summer had three references to the poor lady who gave all that she had to give.

  last night we had a very boring talk about how little we give as compared to how much we recieve from the tower.

Last night we had a very boring talk about how little we give as compared to how much we recieve from the tower. When I first started, this decent into hell, I was told that one way that you could tell that this is god's organization is because it is doing so well without donations. I don't believe that to be so anymore. I am also wondering if they are going to start passing a hat around or requiring a portion of our paycheck. Could this still be god's organization because it is struggling? (joke)

  WHAT'S THE WORST SCANDAL YOU KNOW OF?

  some here have been privy to certain scandals such as pedophilia in your congregation.

  we have never had such a scandal in our area that became well-known.

  one of the worst scandals i've heard was that of how 2 elders terrorized an entire congregation.anybody that disagreed with them, was considered disloyal.
