This was after my 'honeymoon' period of being a new JW. Yet, it was still a couple of years before I actually left.
I remember sitting in the KH listening to the meeting & my mind wandered. I started looking around the congregation. Of course, being fairly active in the cong, I knew everyones business.
It dawned on me that around 70% of the congregation (and that is being kind) were depressed or just plain miserable. Many were on anti-depresants. In one way or another people were not positive, well rounded out, happy people. There was deep rooted problems & I knew it was the same in other congregations.
Then I started to see the divides everywhere. This one didn't like that one. This person had fallen out with that person 20 years ago & it was still an issue. This family were not talking to that family. That elder didn't see eye-to-eye with those 2 elders who were good mates together. The pioneers never really liked working together. Etc, etc.....
And I thought; Why would I want to bring anyone from the world into this organisation to be part of this misery?
It was the thin end of the wedge. As soon as I was thinking along these lines, I knew it was the end for me.
Anyone else feel the same?

I just put a bullet in the head of....
by AK - Jeff in....my final jw relationship.. i did it.
i killed the relationship.. my cousin rick and i had been inseparable as jw's.
rick is five years my junior, and in many ways i tried to look out for him like a little brother when we were younger.. i have wrestled with an on again/ off again attempt to stay in touch with rick since i left jw's.

I feel you have done the right thing.
In your last comment there, you put it so well regarding their inability to see even a vague outline of reality. This is what has become so clear to me in recent weeks. It truely astounds me when you hear some of the remarks that JW's make & even worse, what is published in their literature. They have put themselves in their own world which is so far removed from reality. It must be difficult for them to reconcile what they are taught at the KH with what they actually see in the real world.
I had a close JW friend remark to me recently that 'they ARE the only ones who are preaching what the bible says'. And she really believes that.

The JW view of world/personal events is repulsive, unkind & just plain offensive
by jambon1 inon 9/11, an elder: it's sad but exciting!on a loved one dying: we can cope far better with this due to the resurection.on the tsunami, an elder: if they think this is bad, wait untill they see what happens at armageddon (smiling).on armageddon, an elder: i want to be able to see the people dying.on execution at god's hands, a pioneer: it'll put them out of their misery.on the swine flu virus, a pioneer: it'll mean less people for jehovah to kill at armageddon.on the birth of my daughter, a prominent elder: be carefull not to fall into the trap of 'baby worship'on the death of my non jw grandmother, an elder: be carefull at the funeral not to become involved in false worship (don't sing my grans favourite hymn)on the topic of my non jw sisters wedding, the po: if it falls on the weekend of the convention, you should make your stand & not go to the wedding.there is, of course, a normal response to each of these situations.
there is a human response.
one that is touched by the tragedy.

There is, of course, a normal response to each of these situations. There is a human response. One that is touched by the tragedy. Moved to joy by a happy event. Grief at the loss of a loved one. And pity for those who are suffering.
I never really saw too many normal responses in my time as a JW.
Jehovahs Witnesses - A religion for unkind, unloving, inconsiderate arseholes.

I come from what I consider to be one of the finest cities on earth. Edinburgh, Scotland.
I love the place. Every day I drive along narrow roads that tourists flock to in the summertime.
Cobbled streets dating back hundreds of years.
My great, great, great, great x4 grandparents have walked the same streets. They have lived & worked here for many, many generations.
But my love is Edinburghs greatest footballing institution - Heart of Midlothian FC.
Us Scots love our football. We have the 2 big Glasgow teams, Rangers & Celtic. Most of their support is made up of glory hunting fair day supporters. On their day either team can get supports of 65 000 people. But they only turn up to see them when they're winning.
The Hearts support is borne out of pure love. The traditions of our ancient footblling institution are beyond compare. We love our club & we are NOT there for success. We are there because our fathers & our fathers fathers were there to support our club for future generations, win, lose or draw.
So whats your football team & why?
Best,
J

I love it when someone slaps them in the face with the line 'not all people that have the truth end up making an arse of themselves'. I love it even more when people live happily & contentedly for all of them to see.
It runs so contrary to the lies that they are taught at the KH.
Best wishes to you & your son.
