In my area, it is quite popular even for elders to have moustaches. Some of the black brothers even get away with a small soul patch under their bottom lip if they also have a moustache. Long sideburns, goatees, and beards, though, are extremely taboo here. Anybody who has the nerve to grow them is viewed in a very negative light.

Beards are evil, but do you know why?
by free2beme inas a witness, i knew several men who attempted to grow beards.
when they did, and attended meetings, it did not take long to be talked to by elders and told, "as spiritual men, they should not display an outward form of rebellion.
" why was this a form of rebellion?

I think he was attempting to say "loser".
Jesus, you insulted the one guy who tried to be polite to you (AlmostAtheist)
You deserve the verbal beating you are about to take.

Some people don't care about spelling? What people? When you can spell, you don't have to spend 8 hours correcting your grammar, Jesus.

Jehovah's Witnesses: All About Money
by joelbear in.
printing books and magazines over and over again that say basically the same thing.. my newest thought on this.. why not just put the watchtower in pdf format on their web site.
publishers could download as many copies as they need for their family for the study.. you could hold studies online.. no need to print literature anymore..

I can hear it now:
"PDF's of this kind are often sold for $40 or more. Let's keep that in mind when we are contributing to cover the cost of these PDF's."

SELF ESTEEM in the organization
by justice for all indid your self esteem increase or decrease after being in the organization for a while?
-
atypical
It steadily decreased as time went on. As a male in the org, I felt constantly not good enough. I do not like attention, I suffered from panic attacks and didn't give talks or read or say prayer. That in itself destroyed my self image, because I was constantly berated for the things I was not doing. Plus, I watched guys who I remembered as tiny kids progressing to the point of elder-hood, then looking down at me like I was some kind of loser or slacker.
I recently told my dad that I feel I was never allowed to have a shred of dignity in the organization, and now that I am not attending meetings, the org seems determined that I can never have dignity even if I am gone.
That to me seems like enough to prove that it is not the truth.

Happy birthday, man! I read your old post and I applaud you for being able to hold your head up and not be ashamed of how you feel. I hope someday soon I will be at that point.

Do you feel 'Disconnected' since leaving the borg?
by AK - Jeff ini mean - many of us had a history that was exclusively in the 'truth'.
nothing else.. now having left, do you long for a discussion with some who share your past culture, understandings, and lifestyle?.
is that the 'appeal' of this board to many?

Very much so. It is getting very hard for me to stand lately. My wife is still active, so I have a constant reminder of all the people that don't hang out with me anymore. Also, I have some very, very close friends who are inactive or df'd, but amazingly they still think it is the truth, so I can't even be open and honest about how I feel with them. One of those friends even started going back to meetings last week after years of inactivity.
It has been so bad lately that I have even considered going to meetings once in awhile just to ease that stinking line in the sand (I know, I know, it won't make things better, that's just how frustrated I am).
