  Tonight's PBS NewsHour program will be viewed at different times across the US. Here in Tennesse it's on at 6 PM. In the East Coast of the US that program starts at 7 PM. In California, etc., it airs West Coast Time at 6 PM. Please check to see what time PBS NewsHour airs in your area.

  Jehovah's Witnesses Cover Up Child Sex Abuse

  The Jehovah's Witnesses have 8 million worshippers across the world. Most Americans meet them face-to-face on their doorsteps, as worshippers practice "field service" ministry, going door-to-door in neighborhoods throughout the country.

  Growing up in Fremont, California, Candace Conti was among them. She recalls ringing doorbells and distributing Bible literature to potential worshippers.

  "As a kid, I just remember my whole opening shpiel was, 'Wouldn’t you love to live in a beautiful place like this? There would be no sickness. There would be no death. Your loved ones that had passed away would be brought back to life.'" she remembers. Conti spoke to Trey Bundy, a reporter with Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting. As Bundy tells The Takeaway, the Witnesses' organization soon became a dark place for Conti.

  She claims she was repeatedly molested by an elder member of her church, Jonathan Kendrick. While Kendrick was never prosecuted in criminal court, a civil jury found evidence of wrongdoing.

  Bundy's investigation into the Jehovah's Witnesses found that Conti isn't alone—he uncovered a widespread pattern of child sexual abuse and cover-up within the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, the Jehovah's Witness global headquarters in New York.

  As Bundy explains, the Watchtower instructed local elders to cover-up the abuse—or, in the words of one attorney trying more than a dozen sex abuse cases against the Watchtower, "Keep your mouth shut. Do not go to law enforcement."

  In this week’s story, there will be three different topics covered.

  You’ll hear the secrets of what one powerful religious hierarchy was keeping under wraps; troops opening up about their experiences with torture and whether officers are being held accountable; and Reveal’s look at why so many cities in the U.S. are left without high-speed broadband.

  The name of the segment about Jehovah’s Witnesses is “Trying to Keep Secrets.”

  The “Reveal” radio show gets picked up by more than 200 public radio stations around the country. So whatever the public radio station is in a given region, that's where it will air. NPR doesn't distribute the show, but in most places, the show will air on the same station you would tune in to listen to NPR.

  Each station will start broadcasting February 14th Reveal stories whenever they want to program it starting today, Saturday, at 12:01 A.M. Most stations will likely air it over the weekend (when a lot of listeners tend to tune into public radio), or early next week. Some will run it multiple times and some will run it later in the month. It will air in most of the major markets: New York City, Chicago, etc.

  The show will be live on the Reveal website starting today, Saturday, so you can listen to it anytime you want to.   We  post information that mentions JWs, Nitty-Gritty, no matter what it's about. We chose the name "Andersonsinfo" to post under so people understand that we pass along information to do with JWs, good and bad. You disagreed with the article, and you said why. That's what this discussion board is all about. If you don't like the subjects of the articles we post, write the publishers of the story and express your opinion or use their comment section.

  By the way, the person that the article was about didn't say that it was a policy among the JWs to prearrange marriages. She said that it happened to her. She had a right to tell her experience as you have a right to tell yours.  Even though you haven't heard of prearranged marriages among JWs, we have. It depends on the culture that many JWs come from.  

  From our experience on the inside of the Witnesses world headquarters, we know that WT leaders are neutral to this type of thing and try to stay out of it. However, in many congregations, it's not necessarily that way, but you're right in saying that overall, JWs do not practice prearranged marriage although we, of course, don't know what goes on behind closed doors among JWs and what they do in private.

  In this case, Lee Marsh,  a long-time poster and moderator on this discussion board, did experience prearranged marriage and also abuse at the hands of some JWs and stated that she hears that other JW women have experienced the same things. Many JW elders have never dealt with a case of child sexual abuse either, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen to children of JWs by JW molesters.

  Out with Consequences, Debbie L. McDaniel, a disfellowshipped Jehovah's Witness, details a childhood of sexual abuse suffered at the hands of an elder whom the church refuses to punish. As a child McDaniel learned how deep cultures of shame, denial, and hypocrisy can be when she is made to suffer a years-long cycle of sexual abuse at the hands of a church elder. When simultaneously speaking out and admitting her homosexuality gets her disfellowshipped, McDaniel is shunned by not only the congregation, but also her family; all while her abuser remains in good standing with the church. The church warns her and other victims to keep quiet. And going to the authorities does little to help; although her abuser is arrested for his crimes, he is just as quickly released. Despite it all, she survives the fallout to tell her story. In a time when churches' stances on sexual abuse and homosexuality are constantly making headlines, Out with Consequences offers a must-read perspective. Written with the strength of voice of someone who has seen it all, McDaniel's story is sure to teach other survivors that if she can survive, they can too.
