"complaining and arguing is about selfishness"I can't quite agree with that, what if you are complaining or arguing about how somebody else is treated eg. human/animal rights getting abused. Complaining about you sibling getting something is selfishness. Selfishness, is when you can only think about youself and what you want. this is an interesting topic though, does make you think. Btw, ozziepost, isn't it time for you to make another weekend thread? it is afterall sunday night Evanescence *can't get out of the red sorry*

*** Watchtower 1963 Aug 15 p.497 Each One Will Render an Account ***
8 All children of Adam need correction, and at times firm discipline requires the rod, in the administration of pain. "Foolishness is tied up with the heart of a boy; the rod of discipline is what will remove it far from him." (Prov. 22:15) Jehovah's discipline is thus not a watered-down discipline such as that advised by some worldly authorities who would always hold back the rod. But the literal rod is what is basically meant at Proverbs 23:13, 14: "Do not hold back discipline from the mere boy. In case you beat him with the rod, he will not die. With the rod you yourself should beat him, that you may deliver his very soul from Sheol itself." At times, then, a parent will need to speak to the child by the administration of pain. This pain, God's Word assures us, is not going to kill the child; but it will have beneficial effects, protective benefits for the child, protecting "his very soul from Sheol."Evanescence

To help understand the difference between a religion and a cult, firstly look at this thread
http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/96309/1.ashx
That has the 8 characeristics of a cult.
Get the book: "cults too good to be true" by Raphael Aron
The book talks about the difference between a religion and a cult.
As a Catholic I don't feel that I am being controlled by fear, you learn to worship God out of love and not fear. 'Be not afraid '
In fact if you go onto www.catholic.com and go onto the forums there, you'll see that this topic has been discussed a fair bit.
Once you have a relationship with God, you learn to not be afraid, sure the thought isn't all that great, but its best to choose not to dwell on it and be constantly afraid.
Religions help you concour death and the fear of death, cults generally pound it in your face saying "if you leave you will die!"
Catholism in particular as you all know rarely excommunicate, the fear facter is not used.
Its mentioned in the bible that there is a hell, lake of fire etc. We can't just choose to ignore it because it sounds rather disturbing.
religions don't teach about hell for it to be a threat, this topic is very controversial. It is a disturbing thought suffering for eternity.
But the teaching is not there to contol people with fear.
All actions have a concequence.....

Hell is a scare tactic used by "Christian" leaders to keep their flock in line.
Don't think so, they only teach what is written in the bible. Here is a link on hell, http://www.catholic.com/library/Hell_There_Is.asp Cults use fear to control people but religions don't so make sure you don't get those two mixed up. Evanescence
