Fiance's Mother is a JW
by Theseus ini am not a jehovah's witness and my fiance is a former jw.
i was also raised as a [insert generic ideological confine here], however, i managed to break away and started thinking freely, emancipated my emotions etc... suffice it to say, i understand the hardships of rebelling against an oppressive ideology against serious emotional and physical odds.
my fiance's struggle was just as difficult.

How do we test our OWN philosophy or world view?
by Terry inthis topic is about the difference between how we see the world and how it really is.. we each have our own way.. some of us try to be mostly rational.. others, prefer a more religious, spiritual or mystical approach.. i'd say most ordinary people (non-specialists) mix the two.. .
with that premise in mind, i say the following:.
dropping an egg on the floor tests the integrity of the egg well-enough as measured against gravity :).

Frist it is to understand that all thinking is abstract. That which exst in the mind rather than what exist in the external world. From this comes subjective reason and objective reason. The two can co-exist in harmony until one form attempts to overpower the other, becoming an age old conflict.
How do we test our world view, our philosophy of life? Be open minded, recognize the other's world view, do not become ridged to the point of snapping into. Think outside the box, be prepared to SEE all sides of an opinion. You cannot test your world view with ridged, unbending subjective, or objective reason. No matter how much you extort objective reason it continues to be subjective to what you experince and the knowledge you have, same applies to mystic thinking. Expand your knowledge base, do not lean on one form of thinking. Science is as much enslaved to the abstract as is the mystic.
As you expand your knowledge base you will find solid views from both forms, subjective and objective. Testing is continuous, don't fall asleep at the wheel.....

How (not) to destroy a thread and turn it into a battleground
by Terry inwe are adults here and don't want jwn to reflect a hostile enviornment for lurkers who may.
wish to learn about the watchtower.
many first timers might be very curious to discover whether.
-
Quentin
I like butter, salt and pepper with my ad hominem.....ummmm, wait that's homeny. Don't think we can ever get away from battleground threads. It's like trench warfare of WWI. Whitsles blow, over the top comes the attackers. Machine guns blaze away, bodies drop, cannons boom, more bodies fall, attakers are beatin back, retreating to the safty of their trenchs. Lick their wounds.
Off in the distance bugles blare and here comes the swarm of the other side. Repeate, repeat, over and over. Your points are admimrable, but too many folks enjoy, with glee and gleem in their eyes, the trench warfare mentality of battleground threads. Nope, that's the nature of discussion boards no matter what they were created for.
I do think though we should make more use of PMs between posters in an attempt to keep a thread on topic.

I'm sorry Anniegril the forum changed format several years ago and I can't find a way to get back to my own profile. I know it can be done because some folks have changed their avatars. Can anyone help Annie with this?

JWN Is Not The Same Place It Was Years Ago . . .
by PublishingCult intd made the following statement over in another thread, and so i thought it would make a good topic of its own.. jwn is not the same place it was years ago and years from now, it won't be the same place as it is today.. how has jwn changed over the years, old timers?
.

Quentin
Came here six years ago. Never noticed any changes, except some have moved on, or gone elsewhere. As cyber said a place frozen in time. Same questions get asked, same answers are given. Trolls come and go, People who claim to be, or claim to have been have been jw's post. Some posters suprise you when they suddenly drop into a thread.

Does your personal NEED or WEAKNESS give you the right to demand?
by Terry inlet's start at the old desert island, shall we?.
a group of survivors (just like the tv show!
) are marooned on an island with no way off.they are all sorts of people with various strengths and weaknesses.. the strongest among them do the hardest work.
-
Quentin
Well, lets see, on the island in my present pysical condition I'd have to do something that was low key, low stress. What could a weakling such as I contribute to the common weal?
Tend the fire at night, make sure it doesen't go out. Get it cranked up at sunrise by stoking and have it ready for morning meal. Gather small loads of firewood, sort them for building said fire. Stire the food pot, make sure it doesen't boil over. Baby sit any kids that may have survived, in order to free those with stronger abilities to do the grunt work, on and on, and on. In otherwords somehow, someway make myself usefull in order to have a place at the table. That's called having a work ethic.
What does a parisite do? Nothing, but they make themselves seem they are doing. Using any kind of deception in their tool box. Some parisites hide out. When the dinner gong bangs their they are elbowing their seat at the table.
To me it's not the strong verses the weak, it's rather those who are willing to contrbute whatever they can verses the true parisite.
