Top AI inventor Geoffrey Hinton reluctantly concluded that AI will probably humanity fairly soon
by slimboyfat ingeoffrey hinton, major inventor of artificial intelligence: .
“if you take the existential risk seriously, as i now do—i used to think it was way off, but now i think it’s serious, and fairly close—it might be quite sensible to just stop developing these things any further, but i think it’s completely naïve to think that would happen.
there’s no way to make that happen.

A good natured downplaying of AI risk by Robin Hanson here, but ultimately not terribly convincing!

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”
― Upton Sinclair
LE will never “understand” that his actions disqualify him because he simply cannot tolerate that conclusion. With no other viable way of sustaining his life (despite his lame and unconvincing claim of an outside job offer) it can be described as existential for him.
Unless he does find an exit route to an alternative income it could get messier and more desperate as his support drifts ever downward. As he realises there is no way back and no way forward he’s likely to strike out even at his own remaining supporters.

Yup looks like it. I can’t believe some people haven’t stopped sending him their money yet. And did nobody demand their money back through Patreon?

Prostitution is illegal in Thailand and Croatia only for the party getting paid. Lloyd paid but it was not illegal!
Really? That sounds back to front.
Has Le been referring to this specifically too? I thought his strategy was to get ever more vague about what the actual controversy is about. -

There are plenty of memes on this thread that would do as appropriate “submissions” for his “wall art”. 🙄

“I’ll do my work in my own time, but thanks.”
I bet that response to someone offering you advice sounded impressively smart inside your own head. In reality it’s just you letting your personality slip out again - but keep it up, you’re doing our work for us. 👍

David Chalmers? Cool, he’s one of my favourite philosophers. 👍
Beth Sarim I think many are now expecting it much sooner than that, like within a few years, perhaps within a decade.
Geoffrey Hinton says he never used to worry about super-intelligent AI because he assumed it was 100 years away or more. That was his view for decades while at the forefront of research. But in the past three years the rapid progress of AI has surprised him and he has completely reconsidered his expectations.

I wonder if any who were dismissive of the threat from artificial intelligence are reevaluating the situation yet? More experts now expressing concern publicly.
