Poster country flags and privacy

the new forum originally had a little country flag next to each post showing the country that the post was made from based on the geoip encoding (the country the ip address is from).

before i switched over to the new site someone made an issue about it violating their privacy and i didn't want to complicate and confuse the switchover with policy debate at the same time as technical issues so removed the flags even though i disagreed.. someone has already requested it as a feature and i think it should be added back so i thought it's now time to open the discussion and get everyone's opinions.

AND I note with great interest that NOT ONE flag has appeared next to the postings on this thread - in other words, it is a feature that can be switched on or off. With or without our consent.

I have posted on MANY different issues over the years. Common to some not to others - and a country is a huge set, but witnesses in a country generally is a small set.

This thread is just starting to resemble locking horns, irresistible force vs immovable object.

If somebody on the board CHOOSES to get to know another poster more personally (fraudulent or not) that is up to them. We are all in charge of our own lives.

If we need protection from trolls and witness witch hunters on this board, and we have been informed of the fact that we DO - then I claim the protection of my geographical information from their eyes.

The flag next to a witness poster immediately narrows the list of possibilities. In countries where there are say ??? witnesses, even just knowing you belong to a profession, say surgeon, narrows down the possibilities to a few dozen. See - I couldn't even post the NUMBER in my country.

How many witnesses in MY country have had - daren't mention it now. Daren't mention that thingy about my mother. or my grandmother. or my brother. or my uncle, or the brother who did that thing. What thing? murder, rape, pedophilia? I can't say.

yes - I was naive enough to reveal little snippets here and there over the years. If I had been told my nationality would be revealed later, a lot of my contributions would never have happened.

Interestingly, the flag never appeared next to my posts - as I left the nationality field blank.

IF a BJORK was so concerned about his identity then he shouldn't be posting very specific things that already identify him. I am not talking date of birth DNA - It would be an absolute WEASEL not to know the kinds of details sea re talking about.

The Country ID was usually given if you wanted . Look at all the different nations given b¥ Blondie over the years.

It was never displayed for me, because I never filled out that part of the form.
