2005 JWD Annual Report
by seattleniceguy inwell, 2005 is drawing to a close, and that means its time for another edition of sng's annual report.. i have quite arbitrarily decided that our jwd year ends on december 15, and using the member directory, i have extracted a few statistics.
this past year, 4973 new members signed up for a new total of 21081 members, or a 30.9% increase.
our increase of 4973 breaks down to about 414 new members per month, or (using the society's published average of 65 publishers per congregation) approximately 6.4 congregations a month!

Help me find a poem: "This is my box"
by seattleniceguy indoes anyone remember this poem?
it was all about a person who lived in a box that they loved.
they box made them feel safe and sound, and they knew they could trust the people inside their box, but they were afraid of the world outside.

Worksheet for JWs with doubts
by seattleniceguy inbeing a witness involves accepting what you might call a "pyramid of belief.
" witness doctrines are based on their interpretation of the bible, which is in turn based on the belief that the bible represents the word of god, which is in turn based on the belief that there is a god that communicates with humans, which is in turn based on the belief that the universe was intentionally constructed by an intelligent being.
the jw belief system is thus the very top block on the pyramid of beliefs.. witnesses are not in the habit of considering their beliefs in this way, so it can be eye-opening to take a look at what you honestly believe at each level of the pyramid.

How do you know Satan didn't write the Bible?
by seattleniceguy inthe standard christian story on the bible is that god wrote it to let us humans know what's going on, lay down some rules, and tell us how to get saved from our pitiful state.
as everyone knows, i don't buy any portion of this.
but i have a question for the believers.

New $100 laptop could jump start education in developing world
by seattleniceguy inthe idea: create a crank-powered laptop that children can use to learn and communicate even in remote areas, and give one laptop to every child.. a one-minute cranking session powers the laptop for 10 minutes.
the laptops are outfitted with a wi-fi radio transmitted that allows multiple machines to become a communications mesh that can share internet connections of any member who happens to have one.
at $100, and with assistance from donors, real diffusion into poor and developing nations is made possible.

Organic molecules (building blocks for life) abundant in the universe
by seattleniceguy inturns out the ingredients for life might not be so hard to come by after all.
a nasa team has found that "a class of compounds that is critical to biochemistry is prevalent throughout the universe.
another quote: much of the chemistry of life, including dna, requires organic molecules that contain nitrogen," said team member louis allamandola, an astrochemist at ames.
