Not surprising at all....the whole old Barbary Coast was littered with sunken ships and this area was subsequently reclaimed as land for several blocks south of modern-day Embarcadero. Quite a nice find. And there's likely a lot more out there.

So cool! I read about these ships that came around the Cape to deliver to San Francisco only to have the crew members jump ship to begin digging for gold! So many ships lost their crews to the gold rush they were left in port and decayed and houses were built from their wood and even towns were built over them. Many waterfront buildings have in their basements remnants of abandoned 1849 ships.
