Sodom and the Benjamites

Has anyone ever noticed the similarity between Genesis 19:1-9 and Judges 19:14-25?
It seems that the Sodom story was created to provide a reason why the people of Sodom were killed by some kind of volcanic event that they couldn't understand, being a primitive society that thought such events must be divine execution.
It also seems that the story in Judges was based on the Sodom story, and was politically motivated to incite and/or justify hatred toward the tribe of Benjamin.
    Any thoughts?

Yes the Judges story is a doublet of the Genesis one. The author(D?) was deliberately drawing a parallel with J's material.

As a side note, the Sodom and Gommorah story (fire and volcanic brimstone falling and burying cities)is likley a very old one but the names here appear to be literary creations (Gommorah means "heap of ruins" and Sodom may be related to Siddim which refers to pits of bitumen) . IOW There never was a city named Sodom or Gommorah.
